The flasher is load sensitive, so it may not work if the battery voltage is too low.
Check your battery voltage with the engine running and not running. If the voltage is lower with the engine running, then you may have a charging problem that gets worse when the headlight comes on.

My buddy has the same problem a 1975 xs blinkers only work when bike is not started, checked battery, and charging system everything is good, pamco's idea was the first thing I thought of but It"s not the problem gonna try again today,Anyone got any other ideas? I have been wrenching on these things for awhile and this is the first time I"ve seen this one, really got me stumped. It's running after market flasher small turn signals not led,s. Somewhere power is being soaked and not getting to the signals. perhaps a coil problem??? I dunno.

The aftermarket signals may be the key. The flasher unit is VERY load sensitive and the wattage of the bulbs is critical to them - they HAVE to be 27 watt (32 candlepower) bulbs (with a 3.4 watt in the idiot light), or the flasher doesn't work properly. When I switched my bike to LED's - I had to get a special flasher unit that isn't load-sensitive and works with LED's.

Have you tried a 522 flasher from the parts store? It has just two prongs instead of three like the stock flasher. Just plug it in where the stock one goes, but the two prongs go where the brown and brown/white wires are. Don't use the black wire, it's a ground. Leo

I solved the problem which in turn will help solve a lot of peoples blinker problems. What happens is that when you have the motor running the coil interferes with the flasher if its too close to the coil, especially with after market high output coils and after market flashers. If your blinkers work with the bike off but when you start it up they wont work its probably interference.Move your flasher as far away from coils as possible it should solve your problem, that is if your charging system is working properly

If it's interfering - you might be able to wrap it with metal and ground it (a Faraday Cage) - that would stop all external interference.
I tried it with mine when I swapped to LED's, but it didn't solve my problem - I needed a flasher that was compatible with LED's - which the stocker isn't.

I got mine from www.superbrightleds.com $8.95 and it don't like the green monster coil. It flashed but very erratic. It can flash from one led bulb up to 150 watts of any type bulb. Leo

dp - that's just a bank of big resistors that wastes power. Takes away all the advantages of using less power with the LED's. Better to get a better flasher unit and save 98% of the power.
