OK guys..Who here has done a conversion to the 80-84 Factory TCI and Pick-up coil equipped machines over to use the earlier Factory Points type ignition system?
With the supply of servicable Yamaha TCI boxes and Ignition Pick-ups fading into the "getting real hard to find good parts" catagory.. A solid, easy to understand points conversion plan would help many "late model" XS-650 owners get or keep their machines on the road and running reliably.
This subject may have been discussed to death elsewhere on the net. But as far as I can recall, it has not been a subject of in-depth discussion here..
Let's see if we can put together a solid plan for this needed conversion.. I'll sticky this to the top of this catagory..
Oh yeah...Did I mention a pretty much "non invasive" conversion would be a great thing.....LOL...Meaning if possible, not being required to severely modify the stock 80-84 wire harness into a mess.. ;D

Six, I have the impression that parts for advance timing units on the points type systems are getting equally rare and that soon, conversion to points won't be an option, either. Looks to me like the Boyer or some such aftermarket system will be the way to go.

That may be true Pops, Maybe the Boyer or some other system might be the way to go... But considering points systems are generally servicible on the side of the road, and there were many, many, more XS-650s built with the points set-up, than the TCI iggy system, makes spare points system parts easier to find and carry around...Maybe Mikes will come up with a new ATU and save us all! LOL

Last I heard, Speed and Sport (Top Dog Yamaha) had some unused ATU's for under $150, which is less than half what I seem to recall them going for back in '94 or so (which was when I stuck in a Boyer Micro Digital and never looked back). Don't know if they were NOS or reproduction.

No sweat with the wiring harness... I took a look at the various schematics and it should be dead easy.
1. Unplug and pitch TCI.
2. Remove old coil and install coils/condensors from older model (or new equivalent). Use the existing R/W wire to old coil for coil power.
3. After installing points, run one wire from each point set to it's own coil/condensor.
So you don't need to mess with the harness at all.
Options:
a. If you're not rephasing, use a dual-output coil (CB160? or aftermarket) and wire both sets of points to it.
b. Along with (a), get a dual-lobe points cam (CB160, CB175?) and convert to single set of points ala Bob Scogin's bike.

Thanks for the research info Miker....I've considered the single points conversion of Bob Scogins as it seems like a real simple solution....Wasted spark!
thx

before you time the points you have to have them gapped right. if the gap set at .016 won't allow the breaker plate to turn far enough to time the points, try setting them a little tighter; .014 or looser .018. maybe as far as .012 or .020. i know this works i just don't recall which way to go for more or less advance. try one way if it helps try a little more. if it gets worse try the other way. another thing, make sure your timing chain adjuster is set so the plunger just comes flush with the housing. if the chain is loose the cam timing will be off and then getting the ignition timing wiil be harder. i hope this helps.

Floyd,
No. You will need the wires from both points run to the terminal of the dual post coil. Unless you buy the double lobe points cam from mikesxs.com, then you can run a single point.

The TCI coil has a 2.5 ohm primary. The points need a 4.5 to 5 ohm coil. if you use the TCI coil you may burn up the points quickly, the 2.5 ohm coil draws almost twice the current than a 4.5 ohm coil.

How difficult is it to install the auto advance rod and assembly? I put a permanent magnet system on without knowing about the points system and now i need to convert. I'm not the best mechanic and dont want to get in over my head. Does the Pamco ignition system have instructions on installing the auto advance system? and help would be appreciated.
