I have looked at building a spare tci unit. The trick is finding the ic chip. I have only been to find them in quantity

Gee, I can't see the advantage in this. When the TCI fails, and it's 30+ years old by now, get some appropriate aftermarket electronic ignition. Points sets are $30 anyway so the new and better electronic ignition will pay for itself in a few years of riding. The timing doesn't vary either. A Boyer-Bransden or Pamco is a pretty straightforward installation.

Pamco Pete's ignition works great. What's wrong with it? Not too expensive. Relatively easy to install.
