My JB Weld broke at the seams. Ruined the stator. That stuff is garbage. I knew I shouldn't have used it. My advise is to tack weld it at least.

JB Weld is not intended for that use.
I will fabricate and weld tabs on my stator bracket.

Hi guys, I'm new here and I've been reading this swap and it sounds great. One thing I am not clear on is what year bike this was and how the spark plug timing worked out on this? Was it a custom job, points ignition or stock electronic ignition from the 80's (if thats really what it is). I have a 1980 and to my understanding the 80-84 XS650's used marks on the rotor for ignition, correct? So how does this setup take care of that? or is there something I am missing?

i installed the vf500 stator and voltage reg. but my bike is overcharging (35 volts when u rev it.) i tried a new regulator and made sure it was grounded well... if i hook up a batt it helps but its still 18volts. do i have something wired wrong?

It sounds like the regulator is not regulating. Mine was doing the same thing before I added the capacitor. Although a battery would have done the same thing. I don't know if you have it wired correctly, you did not say how you wired it. If it is the matching regulator for the stator then it would be pretty hard to wire it wrong. The three prong stator connector plugs into the three prong connector on the regulator. If you do that then you should get a steady voltage from the regulator. It is self contained, doesn't need to be grounded, but it will likely need a cap or battery across the output to steady it out. If those conditions are satisfied then it's probably a bad regulator.

If you have no interest in keeping a battery and do not need a rectifier than why not consider one of the inexpensive regulators used on dirt bikes? "Moose" makes a 12V heavy duty regulator for less than $15. I use it for enduro lighting and on my magneto powered 77 650. It is very reliable, easy to install and does a very good job. good luck, wayne huff

If you ran all three stator coils together they would cancel eachother out and your output would be zero.

If you guys are looking for a 12V regulator Parts Unlimited has a heavy duty regulator that is cheap, easy to install and will handle a lot of voltage. PU number is 2112-0090 less than $15 I don't use a battery on my XS. This regulator would be a much better alternative for the capacitor some of you are using to replace the battery. good luck, wayne

I have the same setup and the exact same problem. I think I have it wired right but the battery is wasted. I hook it up to a charger then take it off to test, but like I said it's shot. Would that make a difference?

Anyone come up with a good bolt on solution yet? I don't like JB weld for this and I am not exactly equipped to weld it on. I know the one type of adapter didn't work because of space issues. Has anyone got something else that did work?

I've been trying for a couple of weeks to find an rz bracket. One place in the UK wants $75 shipped for it and the two sources for used ones have flaked out on me. I'm still looking...
