Thanks you guys, the mufflers are packed. I even fired it up. Throaty, yet tolerable. I was starting to think it was imposable to wrap these and stick em in there. After a failed attempt, some tests, then with WD40, a tight wrap could be "worked" 2/3rds of the way. Then a rubber mallet sent them in the rest of the way. Good luck lining up the bolt holes!   If I can get one season each packing I'll be happy. If I ever go through this again... I'm thinking of a mod to these tubes....  See that? I dug out another set of wassel upswept shakers just to take a look. The perforated tube only extends 1/3rd of the way in, then it's capped. Forcing exhaust gasses to flow through the perforations. I wonder how they'd sound with no packing? They are 1 1/2" and wont fit the headers, yet the tube diameter is larger at the end. On the center stand bracing... I have busted one off, and a leg too over the years. Didn't know about the bracing. I Like the grease fittings too. My friend's 78 sidestand is heavily worn. At some point these pipes, engine and other stuff are going on the 77.  Thanks for the tips 22manyrides

OK, backing up a little. I just started a utube account and up loaded this muffler video first.
It's my first youtube thingy, and first post on a board where I try to add a video. Let me know if there is problems or something I can do to make it work better. Like having the box instead of a link. This is just after I got home with the new pamco system in. There is no packing in the mufflers and they are too load! I have since packed them with fiberglass as you can see in the previous posts. I'll get a video of that going after I get the hang of this... 2manyrides
Oh one more thing... Notice how the left side pops in the exhaust but the right side runs fairly true. This is an 81 motor with the pamco pete ignition. total loss battery power direct to coil via an on/off toggle. 1977 carbs just rebuilt (no miles on em) No filters on them. Any suggestions as to where to begin dialing it up? I still have not put this in my regular runner, heck I have not done anything with it since I packed the mufflers...but, things are clearing up and soon I'll be doing more to it. thanks everyone, in advance

Twiddle the carb sync screw in the middle of the throttle shaft until both exhausts sound the same.

Looks like the winter is going to be the time when I do the refurbishing of my daily driver. Adding this 81 motor and the new exhaust. But here, I have a you tube video so you can compare packed and unpacked cocktail shakers...

For those interested in hearing the sound of these cocktail shakers I'm linking to the swap video I made. At the 10 minute mark and on through to the end there's onboard video and side of the road passbys. After 1,000 miles on the set up, (currently), I feel I've blown some of the packing out and have settled in to a bit more throaty sound.
But here she is right after putting it all together...

update 7-5-12 I have about 1300 miles on the mufflers now. They lost their very effective queiting properties at about 700 miles after an extended freeway trip. Not that they are back to a hollow canaster like the original un packed unit. They are still tollerable. When on the road there is a resemblance of a buzzing bee in your ear. Another fact of this change over from stock exhaust is that indeed the bike is down on low-end power. Feel a good pull in HP as you near 4,000 RPM's. I live at 150 foot elevation...runs fine. At 2,300 I noticed bog when rolling on throttle. I then lowered the needle...it's now on the 2nd groove. This has helped. I think the only thing to do to make the short mufflers give more HP would be performance mods. Thus, I am satisfied with the charetoristics.

here's an image... This effectively bumps the thread.  One wrapped baffle. Wonder what they look like now? I'm not going to try to pull them back out just to check... They had to be hammered in with the help of lots of WD-40. The first wrap attempt...fail, cut off...  Yes, it was at this point that it became "hammer time."

And a most recent shot... The cold has begun to set in and even a short trip to the office in November is now requireing winter gloves here in California. This has been a mild year giving much spring-like conditions throughout the spring/summer/fall. Just now winding down the rides...in general.

Mild in maryland egh? Well, it'snot really so bad here, just that to avoid shivers ya gotta get some longjohns on here. Short on daylight, high temps 53 degrees, frost in the morning, ect.
That said, Oh boy this was a great "riding" year. Spring, summer, fall were all better than you could ask for. I'm not a man of many states so correct me if I'm wrong, but don't ya have to kind of put the bikes away for part of the year over there on the east coast?

2many: If it is dry, and sunny, we get them out , almost weekly, and go somewhere or do somthing. sometimes ride them to work,, (my rule of thumb, do not let gas sit in carbs, more than two maybe 3 weeks, with out running to exchange the fuel, and keep the tank full ) That is how i do the "winterization" ,,,, ride them. Hello everyone on the XS. I've not posted in the garage in quite some time so I decided to look up an old thread and chime in on it. We're jumping ahead 3 years from my last post in this thread. Many of my pictures are by the wayside due to "image shack" greed in collecting money for what was once a free service... But some pic's remain. And the youtube videos still garner attention. I'm using postimage now and let's see if I can wrangle some photos up for ya. Just changed out the tires you last saw me with and I'll bet there's not many who will agree, or would have made the same choice. What do you think?

The tires look great.. what kind ? (look like Dunlop 404 ?) let us know how many miles they last ! Never seen them yellow and red stipes... have fun, be safe. preston

Nope not the 404 stuff. These are the old school tires I used to use in the old days. Dunlop Roadmaster K81's. They were the best thing back in the day. (according to some) They do not wear well. They wont last long. But they, I just figured while in my search, why not. For a few bucks more than many lesser performing tires, just go for it! They feel soooo good out there on the road.
