The stock flasher requires that each bulb be 27 Watts. You will have to replace the flasher with an ordinary $3, two terminal thermal flasher that is not load sensitive.

Always check the simple and cheap things first.......
Better to change a couple bulbs and fix the problem, than to dish out a couple hundred $$$ and still have the problem......

ok so i know this has been done to death but my question is similar i just want to rephrase it.... i bought some regular incandescent mini turn signals that have smaller 10 watt bulbs..(the base of the bulb is the same size as the stock bulbs but the glass is smaller so it can fit under the small lenses). theoretically what you're saying is that i could replace the bulb with one that is 27w, has smaller glass and not worry about the flasher right? this is a pain in the a$$ for some cool looking turn signals. does something like that exist? i tried to google specs and different interchangeable parts but didnt' find much....
edit.. ok nevermind no such thing exists... bought the 552 for less than the price of 4 bulbs if they did exist... now to figure out how to hook it up

All that the stock flasher unit cares about is the load - 2 x 27 watt bulbs plus the bulb in the dash.
If you swap out and get a 552 flasher, or an LED compatible flasher (either is cheap and easy) - no more worries! You'll be able to use whatever lights you want!

my bike is an 81... i just wanna make sure the flasher i'm taking away is a 3 prong box thing on the right side of the bike under the gas tank when sitting on the bike....
edit: got it... i was looking at a different thread that showed a picture of a can /capacitor looking device as the flasher but on my 81 the stock flasher is a black box of sorts with the green/yellow and two variations of brown... i plugged into the brown sides and it works beautifully. thanks much for the help and glad this forum is here to help.
