Hi,
I'm a newbie and was wondering how difficult the front end swap would be for an xs1100 standard. I have read many of the posts, all indicate pressing the stem out of both. Do you then insert the xs650 stem into the 1100 trees and weld, or am I missing something else.

What I might try first would be to get the tapered roller bearing kit for the 650, install the races into the frame. If the 1100 trees have tapered roller bearings, try mounting them into the 650 frame races. It may bolt right together. If the 1100 trees don't have the tapered rollers then get a set and see if it goes together. I have a set of the 1100 forks with the air caps. I have been thinking about using them. They are 37 mm tubes, should be a stronger fork. I just need a set of trees.

I will give it a try, my understanding is the xs1100 standard stem is shorter than the xs650. I will have them in hand this week, they are being sent from the west coast, I am on the east. I have a set of FZ600s tree with roller bearings and xs650 stem, tapered roller bearings and races waiting to swap out. I wanted the extra 2" in length the xs1100 had over the FZ600. I found out the hard way the xs1100 forks where 37mm not 36mm like the FZ600  . The positive is I have two stems with bearings to use for different front ends. Thanks

Xsleo, the stem on the xs1100 tree's are about 3/4" shorter than that of the stock xs650 or the 86 FZ600. The top tapered bearings fit perfectly the bottom bearings and race are considerably bigger than the xs650 neck. So I will grind and press out the xs1100 stem and replace with either the 86 FZ600 or stock xs650 stem.

i just decided to do the same thing. was originally thinking I could just ream a mm out of the xs triples but it seems like the angle is off a bit, how well did fitting the xs650 stem into the xs1100 triples work? I have an old xj1100 front end I'd like to use which should be about the same as the xs1100

The XS1100 has tapered roller bearings for steering. Also, the XS1100 standard and XS1100 Special do not share triple clamps. The Special has leading axle forks.
Why use XS1100 forks? It seems a lot of work with very little to gain. The XS1100 forks are every bit as antique as the XS650 forks.

In my case, I'm upgrading because I want the air shocks and dual disc brakes, I like mag wheels more, and I already happened to have the xj1100 frfont end laying around...

That's not much of an upgrade; you're swapping out one pair of undersprung, overdamped damper rod forks for another. Air caps are nothing but a bandaid on a gaping wound as far as damper rod forks are concerned. If you want better handling, less dive, etc., install cartridge emulators and straight wound springs with rate matched to your weight, and dial the sag in right. Since the suspension is a system, you'll need decent shocks as well. Re. brakes, there are plenty of things to do that don't involve switching forks. BTW, no Yamaha ever left the factory with magnesium alloy wheels. Those are cast aluminum.
