This is all good info (for what it's worth....we each have to decide how to use it), but I don't understand why this ONE thread about ONE experience with ONE shop is a sticky. I'm a member of a VW site and they have a buyer/seller feedback forum. All posts like this are redirected to that sub-forum, with each shop/individual/website, etc. having a dedicated thread. Why not have a sub-board here with buyer/seller feedback, good and bad? Have a good experience with an individual or shop? Then say so. A negative experience, then say so, but not just "Joe Blow sucks eggs!". Tell us what and why.

^^^ I have to agree with Scotts about the sub-forum ^^^ But I like the fact that this is a sticky coz its 1 thing to have a 100 dollar bad experience, But a 3000 dollar bad experience is in a whole new level. Hey Ron I know your ticked off but I would try to work it out with the owner and tell them to send you another engine, a complete exchange. Let us know what happens.

I agree. This is the first bad thing I've heard about TRE. I'd hope they would make it right and, if they do, they get props for stepping up and fixing their mistake.

They actually answered the phone. At least Dan the mechanic did. Was told the shop was still open for business but offered no explanation as to why my calls were not returned. Dan said he was the guy who assembled the engines and asked what problems I was having. I told him all the sordid details. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes home tonight and explores the mystery of the gas stove. I told Dan I would like to have a new motor to replace the one I have. Dan said I would have to work that out with Jeff Thomas. Dan also said if I complained or caused trouble he would just blow me off. Nice sentiment. Gave Dan my numbers and asked that Jeff call me. Did not get a return call.

I heard Ardcore Choppers uses their motors on all their bikes, with no issues. So I hope they dont take extra care of a company because they buy more and send regular Joes like Ron crap. I understand mistakes do happen and I hope they take care of Ron's issue and not taint their name over 1 motor. GIVE THAT MAN A REPLACEMENT AND END IT!!!!!

Spoke with Jeff Thomas. He is going to pay for shipping and fix any problems found. Things are looking up. Will revisit this post when engine is returned. Thanks to all for the support. Ron

Hope your perseverance pays off, Ron. If I were you I'd go over what he sends back with a fine-toothed comb, though--have pistons and cylinders miked out, check ring end gaps, check valve guide clearances, the whole job.

I can't wait to see what happens. I have a core that I was planning on sending over there. I know that I don't have three large to dump into it.

Tear it down to check the specs? I would hate to pay that kind of money to then have to dismantle and make sure something is right. I would think that most guys who send there motor there for rebuild are like myself, never ventured into the bottom end or welded a crank. Not sure I would have all the equipment or knowledge to even know what I was looking for. So, if I was going to take on that challange I probably would have done it in the first place. I would think the "know how" was part of what I paid for. But to pay for it to be done and then have to tear it down and inspect it seems like a lot of extra work for $ spent. Jeffery

Jeffery, you need to consider the context in which my advice was given; sometimes you have to make the best you can of a bad deal. In this case, there's a choice between trusting the work of a shop that's already sent back a mess, and checking the work. It wasn't a general recommendation that you tear down and inspect any rebuild you have done (though it certainly doesn't hurt).

This is a wait and see deal. I have put over 2k in the motor already. Thomas is paying the freight and is going to go through the top end and check the rest. Hopefully this investment can be salvaged to everyones satisfaction. Got my fingers crossed.

Spoke with Jeff Thomas on Friday. The motor was torn down and the top end rebuild will start Friday or early next week. Jeff apologized for the 256 cam chain adjuster on the 447 chain. Top end is to be replaced with the correct parts. Still hoping for a good outcome.

Got the engine back. Thomas installed a complete new top end. The thinking was that the oil leaks in the barrels was due to porous metal. Anyway the engine looks good. Hopefully it will run and be tight.
