HI all , Just joined. Rode most of my life and since starting a business 12 yrs ago I haven`t rode at all. I miss it and hunger to get on a thumper and ride. Found a 79 Yam 650 special , he`ll take 1400,(its been very well kept, all original...seems to run fine. Is 24 K high for miles ? Seems tight and starts first kick. ,new tires,chain... I told the guy I want to get it this weekend. I think its a good deal, any thoughts?

Sounds like a nice bike ,I don't think the miles are bad as long as the oils been changed often.
O & welcome to the site

I'd say, unless it's flawless, it's about $500 too much.

Looks like someone kept it totally immaculate. I remember back in the day how much I liked the 650`s and now I see they have a huge following. The buddy pegs were kinda bent down was the only flaw and it seemed that you had to keep goosing it a bit at an idle to keep it from dying. Has stock everything including exhaust. Front forks sagged too.

Might be a tad high.. fork springs can be had... if you'r not in a rush.. keep look'n around. But if it's in good shape.. good rubber.. chain... the usual wear items... soild shape.. blinkers.. no seat rips... by the time you get something cheaper.. then do all of the above... you'r out the $1400.oo... and if you plan on make'n it a keeper... then it's worth it.. Thank you for the feedback. The bike does have new rubber ,chain,sprokets.Seat-no tears,no nuts or screws rounded . Controls are all in tac original. Side covers all good. Weighing the price of one of these compared to a newer scooter or enduro style street and with add on megaphones or gut out the original baffles it would get me there and back , hopefully with that old four stroke drone , I mean I have had two Harleys ,a 750 Honda years ago, numerous dirt bikes in the 70s.

I don't think the miles are too high, but the price is great, but I just saw one in ratty shape, actually I bought a parts bike from the guy for $50 and he wanted $600 for one that didn't even have carbs! So maybe one as good as you describe is a great deal. Most of the ones in Oregon arte going for $2500, if they are in good shape and running. I would worry about the idle part as they should just purr away.
Good Luck and Welcome

I'm always surprised at what people in other countrys think is too expensive. Down under you wouldnt dream of gettin a runner for under $2000. Thats logistics for ya, not to mention supply and demand...

I bought it for 1400 brought it home , torched out the stock baffle plate so it at least barks a bit. Took it out for almost 2 hrs and enjoyed it . Shifts and clutches smooth. Runs real nice ,easy start. Front forks sag bad and I will be looking for , I assume, fork springs and proper fluid. It`s sharp!

Congrats on your new purchase. Let the " fun " begin. If you'r go'n to do springs.. might as well do it right.. do the Minton mods and pop in a set of tapered bearings. Well worth the investment. I have to agree with our fellow Xs fan.. LEETHAL .... here in the states we got bikes stashed in garages.... yard sales... projects that lost desire... that are cheap. There are running Xs units on craigslist locally for less then $500.oo. I know guys from England stay'n here for the summer.. who purchased Brit bikes and shipped them home .. cheaper then they could buy them in England. One of the cycle boneyards ("Breakers" to the Brit types) sold all of the Brit parts to one group and they left the country. When was the last time you saw a running... $500.oo, late 60's.. early 70's Triumph 650...? I have to ask myself if.. or went.. the time will come when we don't see Xs units on craigslist.. yard sales... and $500.oo for a rolling wreck is concidered a " good deal..".. Mike, MN

Thanks all ! Helped in making the decision to no longer be without a nice sounding ole bike. In my opinoin, I always thought the 650 sounded as good as a CH Sporty (ironhead) Hey where can one find the "mods" for the front forks ? It is rather squirly if your riding double (wife likes it better than the 73 Sportster.

If you haven't yet get a good manual, it will tell you how to do most of the maintenance on the bike.
