Nice Bikes!! How hard was it to put that dirt bike swing arm on your "old cafe"?? I'm thinking about doing the same thing. Other than welding a mount for the shock on the frame, were any other modifications needed??

Other than welding a mount for the shock on the frame, were any other modifications needed?? That's not a dirtbike 'arm, it's from a gpz550. It's actually for sale in the classified section. I had 2 of those arms, one mono-shock, and one I welded mounts on for twin shocks. When I sold that bike, I gave him both arms, and he ended up swapping over to the twin-shock one, and gave me back the mono-shock setup. to make it fit the frame all you need to do is weld an upper shock mount in under the battery box (I just used a flat piece of 1/4" plate) and 2 tabs on the bottom of the frame for the linkage.

Neat setup. I haven't read too much about this swap...is there any machining involved, what are your pivot bolt and axle diameters, etc...? Well done.

Rusty I don't know anyone that's done that swap but me, but someone may have. I just happened to work at a motorcycle salvage yard when I built that bike, and free access to ALOT of old jap parts to see what I could make work. as far as the whole story from start to finish to get that arm to fit.... if I remember right (it's been a while) I had to: completely seat swingarm bearings in thier races (they're not fully seated from the factory, not sure why the'd do that) trim off excess material from swingarm pivot tube on arm (effectively narrowing the arm at the pivot) uses stock XS pivot bolt, and a bearing sleeve from ( I believe) an FZR600 rear axle, if I remember right, is 20mm. Could use pretty much anyold skool suzuki gsxr/katana/bandit rear wheel. ( i sed a bandit400 rim, as it's a half inch wider than a kat wheel) still cleared a 530 o-ring chain (t'was close though) Rear caliper hanger and caliper were GS500 items. shock was from either a zx7 or 9 linkage is stock with the GPZ arm it was all alot of trial and error, but I built that bike in the off season when work was slow. Like I said, I worked at a salvage yard at the time, alot of the parts I can't be 100% sure on what they came off of, as there were alot of piles of random parts at that shop, lol. the mods to the frame were dead simple, just a couple tabs on the bottom to mount the linkage to (1/4" plate) and another piece of 1/4" flat plate to the top of the bars under the stock battery box. It was a pretty tight fit, but after alot of measuring and math, it came out pretty sweet. I still kick myself for getting rid of that one, but I traded it for a SWEET DRZ400E that was converted to supermoto (I built the DRZ too, so I knew it's history) You don't even want to know the parts list for thefront end, intake, and exhaust, lol.

Nice bikes! What forks and handle bars did you use on your current daily ride?

just a cheap 2" under DNA springer that I pulled apart and powdercoated black. The bars are just 7/8" tube cut from an old set of buckhorn bars and welded straight to the upper triple clamp.

Can you tell me if you trimmed the stock rear fender or fitted a different one from some other bike onto your cafe bike. I like the abbreviated look.
