I am getting ready to paint my motor before installing back on the bike. I tried a few different brand engine hi temp paints to do some testing and found that they washed off easy with gasoline? The bar b que paint was worse. Strangly the Duplicolor Hi temp ceramic black wiped off easy with gas but the silver did not? The silver sprayed terrible though. Came out VERY thick spurting heavy with no mist. This left lots of disclored areas, it looks like they have some metallic in it and it puddled unevenly.
My friend used ACE satin black from the can and it held up well with gas on a tank. I am letting some 1 part epoxy dry tonight for the gas test tommorrow. Anyone find spray can paint that holds up to gas, heat and flows nice?

I have used VHT (1500F-2000F) Satin Black on both my gas tank and Carbs. Once you cure it does repel gas. Use a heat gun to Cure.

I tried a few different paints and this is what I found.
Duplicolor black engine enamel- I had no luck with the gas resistant test. I sprayed it on some test aluminum. Let it dry for a few days. Cooked it in the oven 2 sessions as the curing described. Waited another week and gas on a rag wiped it right off.
VHT black engine enamel- I come to find they are owned by Sherwin Williams who aslo owns Duplicolor. That is why most chain parts stores sell both and only those lines. They did not stock the VHT in black though and I went through hell trying to get some to run a test with. I called the customer service number and spoke with 2 different people who needed lessons in customer service. They agreed to send me a sample can but could not tell me where to buy it? Kinda strange how they could not tell me anywhere to buy it? I tried the sample they sent me and had the same exact results as the Duplicolor. It didn't go on consistent at all. You know how hard it is to spray a motor, working around all the fins and pockets. If you put it on too heavy it was almost a gloss finish and if you gave it a dusting willing to do multiple aps then it dried flat. Probably the same stuffas Duplicolor in a different can. Thanks for the free can but I won't be using it anyway.
I bought a can of Rustoleum Black engine enamel at a local parts store. It went on real nice but came off the easiest with gas and a rag.
The best reult I had was with the Duplicolor Aluminum color engine enamel. It went on heavy no matter how easy you tried to spray. It almost puddled the metallics in the paint but when it dried it flowed out great. To my surprise it was not affected by the gas and rag test either. A soaked rag with gas wiped on a few day old paint job was not removed at all! That is my official aluminum paint.
One surprise i got was a tip from a builder that I bought a bike from. He built a semi rat bike and sprayed the tank flat black. The paint looks great and never budged when gas hits it. I tried the gas rag test and no transfer of black at all. I asked him what he used. His secret is ACE Hardware Satin Black. I went a bought a can. It was the cheapest and it is a 15 oz can instead of 11. It is not engine enamel, just ACE satin black spray paint. It works great. dries fast, even satin finish and the best bang for the buck. I am testing the heat resistance now. I sprayed some on the cylinder fins right next to the exaust port. Lets see what happens.
