There are a few posts a ways back talking about putting the high pipes from a Honda CL350 onto a XS650. I like the idea, but it seems like the pipes ould be too small to make the 650 happy. A CL350 is actually 325cc, so it's basically half the size of a 650. However, the CL350 revs a lot higher than the 650, to the tune of 10,500 rpm. The only post mentioning how the bike runs says it runs about the same as with the stock pipes. Does anyone have any more insight into this?

More info: I remembered that I had a spare CB350 head pipe laying around (should have the same diameter as the CL350), so I measured the pipe ID where it meets the exhaust port. Using my primitive inside measuring means (slide ratchet sockets into the pipes until one fits snugly, then measure it) I found the ID of the CB350 pipe to be about 1 3/32", while a XS650 head pipe is about 1 5/32". There's only about 1/8" difference between the two.

2/32"=1/16." One impact of the smaller diameter would be to move the torque peak a bit lower in the rpm range. Another effect would be some power loss due to increased restriction caused by smaller ID and flow through the tight bends. Back in the day Honda rated the CL350 around 2 hp lower than the CB, IIRC; most of the difference was due to the CL muffler, but some resulted from the bends of the headpipes. Depending on what you're planning to do, a tad less power and more low-down grunt might be a good thing.

Yeah, the measurement mistake was a no-brainer. My mind was going in a hundred different directions of exhaust plans, and little room was left for fractions. I think the difference in diameter was actually closer to 1/8" than 1/16", though.

Well, I guess I'll never know. I just nabbed a pair of CL450 high pipes. They'll take some work to make them fit, but they have a larger diameter than the 350 pipes. Should be ideal.

Were you able to make them work?

No, they aren't gonna work. I failed to notice that the exhaust ports on a CB450 come almost straight out of the head. They're not angled to the sides like the CB/CL350 or XS650. They would really need a lot of reshaping to make them work, and I don't think it would work very well since they're double-walled tubes. It wasn't a total loss, though. The CL450 mufflers are very cool and I'll be using them. I'm just going to try my hand at fabricating up a scrambler-style exhaust out of mandrel bends.

I wish someone would just manufacture a CL replica that's made specifically for the XS. I'd love to put them on my bike!
