I'd like to do POR15 on my frame when I finally get to that point. Never tried it before though.. The prep sounds like a bitch.

Hello all, Just spent awhile looking for the original post with the electrolysis setup instructions. I remember it being called "Rust removal by electrolysis" No amount or combination of search terms will bring it up for me. Any help would be appreciated... I am ready to give this a shot, and was looking for the specific instructions because I have a dilemma. According to this website antique-engines.com/electrol.asp I shouldn't use a metal container. But aren't motorcycle gas tanks done by attaching the positive cable directly to the tank? My thought was to imitate that setup for some long strips of metal that I need to de-rust for a project. I would like to just use a metal garbage can, hang the strips inside the solution in the can and attach the negative cable to the rusty strips, and the positive cable to the can...any suggestions as to whether this would work? Thanks in advance! Steve in Maine

The 650wiki website used to have instructions posted for removal of internal corrosion of a gas tank using the electrolysis method, but the link now appears broken. Here's a link to another website that provides similar instructions, but the instructions are not as detailed as the one that used to be posted on the wiki: www.motorcycleanchor.com/motorcycle/how_to/mc_tankrust.htmlFor the anode, a coat-hanger wire passed through a rubber stopper that fits snugly into the gas cap opening will work well, if you can find one, otherwise, perhaps a wooden plug will work. Be sure the anode does not come in contact with any part of the gas tank. Connect the positive lead of the battery charger to the anode and the negative lead to the gas tank (cathode).

Thanks dogbunny... The first link is the one that used to be posted on the 650wiki site. It's a good one. Finally signed up to chopperunderground to check out the other link. I'm glad I did. Lots of tech info there. Thanks again... Dan

BTW - I did find some A&H washing soda. It can be ordered through Ace Hdwe and it cost less than $5
