The paint on the plastic sidecovers doesn't seem to adhere very well, it comes of with the slightest rub or bump when taking the covers off and on. I think it is because of the smoothness of the plastic. I want to paint my red bike blue, and wonder if there is any preparation I could do to make it stick on better. I will probably get a pro to do the painting, but I will have to remove the old paint first, any suggestions?

first clean the pieces well, then use green scotch brite and some laquer thinner to remove the old paint, then just scotchbrite to scuff the surface well, then a couple of light coats of bulldog adhesion promoter(available in spray cans at the auto parts store, follow directions on the can), then primer, then paint. or you could skip the primer step if you like if your covers arent really scratched, the bulldog acts as a primer/binding coat. maybe tape off the area that goes into the rubber grommet so it doesnt start peeling the edge of the paint after a while.
