To the people who painted their engines, did you paint it as a whole motor, or pull everything apart (ie heads/cyl/ect) off and paint the parts individually?

I've painted two engines now. Took the engine out, pulled the rotor/stator, left the clutch push rod in to keep that hole sealed and pluged off the intake and exhaust with some old clean rags. To clean, instead of using engine degreaser, I just pus some gasoline in a sprey bottle. Spray, scrub, rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.... You get the idea. Then i rinsed it with acitone. I'm sure any good cleaning salvent would work, Acitone is what I had in the garage. With it all dry, I masked off what I didn't want painted and went at it with VHT engine/exhaust paint. When the paint was dry, I cured it with a heat gun. Then pulled my alunimum covers and polished them.

I used Harley engine paint, I painted mine while apart and blasted it with glass beads prior to painting.

I haven't tried it, but I haven't heard very good things about it. Grill paint will only save you $5 over engine paint.

i would not use por 15 on the cylinder. it was not designed for that. it should also be noted that standard black por15 is not uv resistant and will fade. i used brake cleaner and a tooth brush to clean everything up. non chlorinated preferably and then sprayed everything with VHT ceramic engine paint. good to 500 degrees.
