tz,
That is the light checker. It turns on the red light in your panel when you operate the brakes to tell you that the brake light is OK.
If the brake light bulb is burned out, or you have a broken wire in the brake light circuit, it will flash the red light to let you know.
It does not check the tail light, however.

Hmmmm - wonder if anyone wants mine after I remove it......? Got a new wiring harness on the way, and that's one of the little items that will soon disappear from my bike.....

That and the starter. The best thing I ever did was to remove that stupid starter. It was grinding all the times and weighted a ton. ;D

where do you get a new wiring harness from? can you buy them pre-made to eliminate the starter and/or some of the other non essential components?

Mike'sXS (XS650Direct in Canada) has premade harnesses (IMHO $80 is cheap for reliability and peace of mind).
I replaced my harness this spring with a new one, but I modified it to remove the RLU, the light checker, neutral switch and flasher canceling unit, I installed my Boyer ignition, PamcoPete's alternator, VR, and rectifier mods, and an alternator fail warning light. I also changed out my old 4-place glass tube fuse holder for a 6 position blade-type one (I needed an extra spot for the voltage regulator mod - and now I have a spot to plug in 12v accessories, as well as a fused input for a battery maintainer!). I also ended up changing out almost every connector on the bike because so many had been damaged over time and a few had even melted (along with some of the wires, too). The bike runs better and I feel a LOT safer, too.
With planning, a good wiring diagram to start with, and great advice from the people here, it was actually pretty easy. I don't think that anyone pre-makes them modified as you want, though. After all the planning, actually removing and swapping wires to do all the mods only took me a few hours - including re-wrapping it all with electrical tape.
Mike's also has all the connectors, too, but make sure you know which one goes where - there's a couple that can fool you.

Thanks... Yeah I'm not going to do all that yet but I can see electrical overhauling will come at some point so it's good to know.... Probly when I do an upgraded ignition like you did.
