I traded my airplane for a motorcycle.... At least it won't cost as much for maintenance and storage...
I kind of hate to see it go. I just wasn't flying enough to justify ownership. It went to a good home at least. I can always rent a plane if the flying bug gets me again.
So who knows about "Sport Touring Bikes" ? I need to change my mode of cross country travel. Specifically what I'm looking at is Yamaha FJR-1300, Honda ST-1300, ST-1100, BMW, and whatever else would be in the same ball park. Probably would be looking for something used. 3-5 years old, maybe. Something that I should not have to work on too much If you know what I mean (XS650) ;D
So please pipe in and save me from buying some P.O.S. that needs a tranny or something after 500 miles. ;D
I love wrenching on these old bikes and am looking forward to getting the new RD roadworthy. On the other hand I'm ready to give a modern bike a chance... and try some serious riding.
I got off an ST1100 and onto an FJR1300. I am not looking back. I am fortunate to have multiple bikes to choose from and it is always my first choice when serious riding is up. It truly is a do anything bike with a BIG heart. Handling, power, speed, torque, comfort, brakes, ergonomics, a real pleasure between your legs! If I lost it today I would buy another tomorrow. Need I say more. Besides, if you've been riding a 650 regularly, any of the ones you listed would be another world to you.
I checked out a new Concours 14 at the local Kawi dealer. Call it a gut feeling, but it just didn't trip my trigger. Saddle height was just a bit tall for me. Bike just felt a little "bulky". The salesman assured me that it would kick A$$ of the FJR in a drag race...As if I would care.
The next night went to the Yamaha shop and gave a new FJR1300 the once over. I don't think its just the tuning fork emblem, But I like that bike! Feels great, Looks great, My only reservation is the 2010 price tag! I located this 2007 one relatively near by. About $4500 savings over a new one.
Nice bike like the color better than the silver. The FJR 1300 top of the line in the sport touring class. That 650 is going to collect dust again. You will be doing a lot more flying now. Have fun ride safe ;D
r80rt: :)This is a splendid write up, THANK YOU!!!!

joshua: The regulator/rectifier unit I got from Mikes PMA has closer hole spacing than original. Are we supposed to mill the holes to fit?
Jun 7, 2017 19:25:58 GMT -5
joshua: My bad. I found the bracket they supplied to mount the rectifier/regulator... Uh oh. How is this meant to work? Which way is it meant to mount? Looks like I have to use some spacers or something. Good instructions would be nice.

craig8johnson: I'm checking the charging system. I'm afraid I might have fried the last battery. With the solid state regulator (after market) what should it be charging at. The book says, I think, 15 volts. I'm hitting 17 when revved. Is that too high?
Jul 11, 2017 18:06:19 GMT -5
gggGary: Yes 17 volts is too high, about 14 volts is max, sounds like you don't have the right regulator or it's wired wrong.

tt650: Trying to breathe life into a 1980 that's been stored (indoors) for 25 yrs. Air filters are dry rotted. Have cleaned carbs but she only runs briefly on choke then stops. Need jet setting info and other ideas that might help her idle and rev.

trix13: Hey everyone! New to the forum and am fighting those gremlins!! New charging system, ignition switch, coil and fuse box. Resistance is higher than normal on the ignition pick up so I'm trying to find one. No such luck yet.

trix13: Also, even though all of my connections are clean, I cannot seem to find out why , when at higher rpms, I hit the signals and the rpms pulse with the signals...hahah. same with the brake light. I appreciate all input!!

adlpc: Hello all! Been enjoying your edifying posts and discussions - and as a fan of the XS650 since my early teenage years happy that I now own a 1980 Special which I plan to turn into a vintage half faired racer. Thank you all for being here!
