Here's what I need to power:
Headlight, tail light, possibly small signals.
No E-start.
I'm thinking I'd like to use one of those small sealed batteries, or maybe one of the ultra small sportbike battery replacements that has hit the market, but they are very expensive and some can't use a standard battery tender. I don't like the idea of buying a dedicated trickle charger since I already have several Battery Tenders.
I'm going to fab up a tray to hide everything under my fibergalss seat, and make a new harness from scratch.
I have a '79, bone stock elec system for now. I'm pretty set on the Pamco Pete ign. system with the green coil, etc, but the rest of it is kind of confusing me - electronics are my worst area of knowledge.
I read the entire permanent mag thread, but I'm not sure it's for me... I'm not really trying to eliminate the battery, and I've seen capacitors blow on other people's bikes so I don't want to run one of those either. I'm aware you can run the perm mag with a battery. I like the use of the modern reg/rec and stator in those systems.
I also like the Sparx unit, but at just a tick over $500 I don't think that's likely in this bike's future. I'll have a boatload stuck into the chassis by the time I'm done and I really don't want to just throw money at the thing everywhere else.
I also briefly read a thread about a Chrysler stator and a Radio Shack reg/rec? Is that right? I like the cost savings, but to be honest the reg/rec system kind of concerns me, and there see mto be quite a few exposed jumper wires and such that seem like they could get easily damaged.... am I wrong?
So, in summary - this is a Sunday morning streetbike, kick only, with head and tail light and probably signals. I'm looking for a reliable, relatively free charging system to work with the Pamco ignition and a small sealed battery.
What route would be the best for this application?
