Hello All,
Does anyone here have an idea of what electronic tach can be used with a boyer system. I used an automotive one once for a while and it crapped out. I understand that the boyer could make this a difficult install. The one from mikes does not work with a boyer. I have tried to use the mechanical tach but I was missing some pieces. Namely the tach drive itself and the spacing washer at the bottom that sets the end paly of the assembly. Both of which were given to me by a member of this board over a year ago. It never worked as the tach drive would bind with the gear on the oil pump. Maybe this gear and tach drive need to be a matched set? So final question: Does anyone know of a suitable elecrtonic tach or how I could modify one to work with a boyer. Or does anyone have a tach drive with the gear for the oil pump that I could buy from them?
Thanks Dave

I don't know much about Boyers or electronic tachs. I have worked with tach drives. The tach drive shaft and it's drive gear are interchangable. I have swapped around oil pumps and tach drives with no trouble. If it binds then something is bent. It could be the tach drive or the oil pump drive shaft. Rolling them on a flat surface can tell you if they are bent. The tach shaft you might be able to straighten, the pump drive is to short to do much with. You can make the spacer washer at the bottom easy enough. I tried washers of different sizes until I found one that fit the end of the shaft. I took several and put them on a bolt, screwed a nut down tight on the washers. I put this in my drill to spin the washers against my bench grinder to get the outside to fit in the hole in the case. I then took the bolt and washers apart. Put one on the shaft and installed it in the case. The first time it may be a little tight. If it is take it apart and lay the washer on some sandpaper and move it around in figure 8's to remove a little metal. Refit it in the case. Kepp trying it and sanding it till you get it to fit with a bit of clearance. I don't think it needs much, just enough so oil can get down in there. I have all my good parts in engines right now. I might try to get the tach shaft and oilpump drive shaft. Your gears are probably ok.

I had a similar trouble with the tach drive binding when I swapped out the oil pump on my current project. Come to find out I had installed the big oil pump drive gear upside down and that was causing the binding. You might try flipping the gear over and see if that helps. It worked for me...

I have the electronic tach that MikesXs sells. I don't see why it wouldn't work with the Boyer ignition. I believe that the Mikes electronic tach will work with any dual tower coil, it doesn't matter if the ignition is a TCI or Pamco or Boyer or something else.

Hello,
I had it too and it doesn't work with a Boyer.

I think someone like Pete or Mr. Riggs would know this answer. I think the electric tach responds to how many pulses the ignition system emits per revolution. You match your tach with the pulses. You also may also ask Boyer Brandsen for their view. TC
