'Nother question from a newbie. (1st one I posted was answered quickly, thanks.) I just purchased an '81 XS650 Special. I am planning to put it on the road nearly stock. I am not interested in a cafe racer or a chopper, just want a reliable, comfortable ride. That said, do any of you know where I can find info/sound bites of different exhaust systems. I don't need it to sound like a Harley nor do I want a "crotch rocket" sound. I'm looking for a smooth, mellow sound that will be "comfortable' to my ears on long rides. I've done enough browsing on these forums to learn that it is more complicated than just changing mufflers, that often the jet's need tuning also.
Thanks in advance.

stock exhaust is mellow. Pea shooters are mellow also.

I'm sure James means mikesxs Peashooters. Real Norton Peashooters are on my '77 and the sound is anything but mellow. A very ripping and revy sound. A buddy has the exact same Peashooters bought from the same company around the same time and on his Norton they sound surprizingly different and mellow. ( ?) My suggestion is to get the long mufflers and pipes from mikexs. Most everyone likes these and the long kicked up mufflers look great and have enough volume to do the job without sounding like a lawn mower. Maybe somebody has these where you live. Put your location in your profile and there maybe a set close to hear. If you don't mind the extra coin, the original XS-1 mufflers are the best sounding stock mufflers for an XS. I've heard an original set and the bike sounded fantastic. This was at VMD so I had many good sounding bikes to compare. I think mikesxs has an XS-1 system to go on later bikes. Tom

I think one of the nicest mufflers available for the XS is the Commando from Mike's. Wonderful sound, good performance, and not too expensive. Pair it with some 1.5" replacement headpipes and you have a very nice system. It comes in a version made to fit 1.5" headpipes so no reducers are needed. This is good because those reducers always seem to leak. I have the Commandos paired with MAC headpipes but I think the new headpipes Mike's sells now are even nicer. They weren't available at the time I got mine.

5T,
Do the Commandos let you use the Krausers?

Yes, they do, and with even a bit more clearance than the old Dunstall replicas I used to run. I thought those old mufflers were pretty nice until I got the Commandos. There's no comparison really. The Dunstall reps were really crap, lol. I had the fixed metal baffle version. I hear the ones with the removable baffle are better.
