Working on setting timing on my '79 Special (points). Found out the advance curve allowed way too much Advance. I came up with this fix and wanted to share it and see what you guys thought. I drilled and tapped one of the avance weights for a 10-32 set screw. Screw acts as an adjustable stop for the retart position. After a couple adjustments my advance curve is dead on the marks on both sides. I used some Locktight on the set screw. I don't see any reason this wouldn't hold up fine. It sure seems to work well so far.

Nice--a very creative solution to a chronic problem! Let us know how it works out!

Well, you can also just put some heat shrink tubing on the stop tabs. Putting heat shrink tubing on just one stop tab also causes the tabs on the weights to grip the slotted disk because one weight is further extended than the other. This eliminates timing jitter.

I'm sure there are other (mayby better) ways to accomplish the same thing. In fact my fix tends to put the points plate a bit off of its center of adjustment. (But still had enough adjustment to get the timing right on the mark.) One thing that seems to be an advantage with this fix is that it puts just a bit of preload on the advance springs and they seem to come in a little smoother??? I still had to "Tweek" one spring a bit. And the timing is stable and working well. What the Hey, I'm going with it until futher notice... Thanks Brian
P.S Are we going to see a Pamco electronic spark advance some day? Just a thought....

sevenson,
Well, the real solution is to replace the advance mechanism. MikesXS sells them for just $59.
