OK guys, this has me completely stumped, I've no idea how the bike runs but it does..... here goes. The Martek on my (ex points) 79 roadster appears to be wired competely wrong, not just a little bit but the input/output from the module appears to be completely reversed. Here's a copy of the manufacturers instructions that I've been trying to follow www.650motorcycles.com/Martek.html, this tells me that I should have 4 wires on the output of the module that connect into the original ignition circuit, these should be red, black, green & yellow. On mine, these are actually connected to the trigger unit, the outputs I've got are red, black and 2 whites, I've attached a diagram of how its wired, exactly as when I bought the bike and yes it runs on both cylinders. Has anyone got a Martek and can confirm how it should be wired? it just doen't look right, especially having the negative terminal of one coil wired to the positive of the other? One thing I will add, the wiring between the module and trigger unit look to be entirely original, too neat to have been modified in any way. lh5.googleusercontent.com/_DUe7mZc4k54/TZYPxykrtXI/AAAAAAAAEyI/cw1mR0e0hUI/s512/martek.jpg Any \\ in the sketch indicates where the Martek wiring has been joined to the original Yamaha wiring. thanks guys Max

After a bit more searching and head scratching, I think I might have figured this out, sort of?
Half way between the trigger and the module (hidden under the battery) there's a 4 pin block connector, on one side of it is the 4 wires that are supposed to go to the coils, on the other is the 4 wires from the trigger ie 2 whites, 1 red and 1 blue (my eyesight needs checking, I've incorrectly identified it as black on my sketch)
Question still is , how on earth does it work? can it work with the internal electronis components inside the module working backwards?
If I change all the connections over to as they should be I'm still a little confused, which side of the coils is common + or - ? ie I've got 2 red/whites , a grey and an orange from the coils, which goes where?
Thanks all

It's been awhile, 1978, since I've worked with a Martek ignition. I bought it, installed it, the bike never ran so good. If I recall right the wires from the sensor, what replaced the points was hard wired into the brain box. A hot, a ground and a wire to power the coils. Don't rerally recall the colors. Not much help was it. Anyway if it runs why worry about it.

Problem sorted....
I tried wiring the ignition using the Martek colour code, the result was no spark, went back to how it was originally wired with the exception of where the negative from one coil was linked to the positive on the other coil, I've now linked the two positive terminals together with a live feed from the ignition switch (red/white wire).
The result of this afternoons tinkering is now a much fatter spark than previous, I reckon I must have done something right??
This leads me to a whole new thread on carburretors.
