Ok, I've got a dumb question here guys. The rear brake light switch from Mikes has two wires coming out of it. One has a white stripe the other doesn't. Which of the two is the one I need to run to the switch?

Billy: It probably doesn't matter much, really. One wire should go to a switched power source (so you don't use up your battery when you're not riding), and the other wire should match up with the wire from your front brake switch and go to your brake light. All it is is an on/off switch - and neither side goes directly to ground.
On the wiring diagram for my 79, one wire is brown and one is yellow, actually. Brown is switched power, and the yellow goes to the brake light. They are just bullet connectors, and one is a male, the other female.

Norm, thanks for the reply. I didn't think it mattered (I've already had it on and working) but I've got a non-stock taillight and a custom wiring harness so colors don't help unfortunately. I appreciate the response, I'm spending my day putting the finishing touches on my wiring and the last little odds and ends.

I agree with Norm on the switch. Either wire, either way. I just wanted to add that on a cumstom made wiring harness, staying with factory colors can help in trouble shooting a problem. When you ask for help most will reference the factory colors in the answers.

Leo, very true that would indeed make it easier. Problem is that some of those colors are pretty hard to come by and I just use what is easy to find locally. I'm not an XS purist by any means, I love anything with 2 wheels and a motor (or without).

I did a complete rewire on my bike, but I started with a "new" harness from Mike's, and modified it to fit what I wanted. So I still have the factory colors. I just removed the unnecessary crap, but still have all the lights, horn, starter, and everything else that I wanted to keep.

Starting with even a used harness can supply plenty of good wire. Getting a harness from ebay can work. Stripping harnesses from junkyard cars. Even other bikes can get an assortment of colors.

I went with the new harness, since my old one had lots of the wires melted, a few were burnt, and most of the others were green with corrosion, not to mention the melted connecters - it was time for the scrap bin.... I'm still convinced I was lucky that it didn't burn down.....
