So I have a 1979 XS650 Special, with pamco ignition and coil and no safety relay, turn signal canceler, starter solenoid, light checker and it is kick-start only. It has been doing this recently, it blows the 10A ignition fuse after about a minute of running whether it is hot or not and this video is with me touching absolutely nothing. It was running for about a minute before the vid starts. Any ideas? Thanks

pablo....,
Well, generally if it was the PAMCO it would not run in the first place and the fuse would blow as soon as you turned it on, so I would suggest a partially shorted coil.
1. Is there anything else connected to this fuse besides the PAMCO and coil? 2. What is the part number of your coil? 3. Check your battery voltage for a high voltage condition due to a defective regulator.
Here is a test procedure for the coil:
Testing the coil:
1. Using the lowest scale on the meter, measure the resistance between the primary terminals with the wires removed. Should read from 2.5 to 4.5 Ohms. 2. Using the highest scale on the meter, measure between one of the primary terminals and the center core of the coil. Should be infinite resistance. (open) 3. Measure between one of the primary terminals and one of the plug wire terminals. Should be infinite resistance. (open circuit) 4. Measure between one of the plug wire terminals and the core of the coil. Should be infinite resistance (open circuit) 5. Measure from one plug terminal to the other. Should be 15,000 to 20,000 Ohms

Thanks for the advice, I am thinking the regulator is defective, due to the fact that it is 30years old and the coil is brand new. But if that is not it I will check the coil,
This is the kit I got from mikes: Part #14-0901

pablo....,
Well, the coil that comes with that kit is the 17-6822 which is a bullet proof coil that will take a lot of abuse and keep on working, but test it anyway.
The fact that it takes some time before it blows the fuse is what makes me think that it could be high voltage due to a defective regulator, especially if it is the original relay type regulator. The contacts in those can fuse together resulting in no regulation and the battery voltage just keeps creeping up.
My other question was, is there anything else connected to that fuse?

I am with you on that Pete. And no nothing else connected.
Thanks for info shakernorm. I will do that if that is the problem.

When I still had the mechanical VR on mine (a 79, as well), I was having a bear of a time getting it to work within the range that I needed it. Either it ran too low voltage, and the bike was lucky to run, never mind charge the battery, etc..... or one TINY tweak on the adjustment screw and it was pushing 15+ volts and scaring me that it would fry everything. I was SO happy when I saw the electronic VR that Pete came up with. It was a godsend to me. After switching everything over to LED's - I also have enough power to actually run a halogen headlight - so I can see at night!

I checked the coil and it was fine except for lead to lead, step 5 above. It was 26,000 ohms. That was from the end of the leads to one another. Also the center core of the coil is where the mounting bolts go right?

Is there any other way to make sure that is it? Or is it obvious from that reading that it is screwed up?

pablohoney,
Well, from those results it sounds like the coil is OK.
To see if it is the regulator, run the bike with the regulator unplugged. From your description, the bike should blow the fuse long before the battery gets too low.

I did that. With the reg and rec unplugged and it still blew.
