I have an 82 xs650 chopped. I simplified the wiring basics: Pamco, stator, regulator/rectifier, alternator, headlight, key, tailing. Everything seems to work fine, but I pop my 20 amp fuse while shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. It will idol well and run till I'm driving it. Anyone have any info? That would be soooooo helpful! Cheers

Do you have a neutral light/switch? Does the fuse pop when you shift into neutral... if so, that could be a culprit. If the neutral light/switch were a problem you might be breifly lighting that on the way between 1st & 2nd. Probably a hairbrained idea, but a remote possiblility. What happens if you start the bike in 2nd, then pull out in 2nd and shift to 3rd? If so, then neutral isn't the problem. Second idea would be to check under the left (chain) side engine cover to see if the rotor wiring is routed properly or frayed... maybe the shifter shaft is contacting/moving that wire harness and causing a short.

No neutral shift light! It will start in second and I can shift to third, but it dies on me within 30 seconds of riding. I once read something on ungrounding the stator (3-4mm screws) you know anything about that? Unfortunately I'm not an electrical engineer! Hahaha! checked all my grounds, huge question mark! thanks for your help

hmm... electrical engineer I am not, either. I'm relatively new to these bikes, plus not knowing your harness setup, I couldn't say. Those 2 ideas were the only dim ones I had. So the fuse blows when riding or only when you shift? Maybe someone else can chime in...

mastertacks,
A better question would have been...do you have a neutral switch installed? That has to be the problem. Just disconnect the light blue wire on the switch located on top of the crankcase.

The three nylon screw mod ungrounds the black wire brush. This is for doing a solid state regulator on the 70-79 bikes. Adding the nylon screws on an 82 will waste your time and not help the problem. You simplified the wiring, did you just modifie the stock harness or make a new harness? Leo
