Just put the engine back in my '81 XS650. On the motor mount bracket at the top of the engine there appears to be a ground wire screwed into the bracket. It has a large loop on the opposite end that obviously goes under a nut somewhere, but silly me, don't remember where from when I took it apart. The wire is only about 5" long. I'm guessing it's supposed to go on the engine somewhere? Any help me? Thanks in advance.

That wire is vestigial remnant from an earlier time when XS650s used condensers that needed to be grounded. Your bike doesn't have condensors, so you don't need the wire.
