Hello, I have a 81 xs650H and have a interesting turn signal issue, both right and left flash but you have to hold the switch to the right or left depending on direction, as soon as to release the switch to recenter lights go off instead of staying on, after a while it will work normally. any ideas? Thank you for your time and response. Ron

Sounds like a corroded switch.

As long as you're careful (and probably take lots of pictures so you don't mix up the parts), disassembling and rebuilding the switches on these isn't too hard. The hardest part is trying to convince all the wires to fit back where they belong.....
It also gives you a chance to make sure that all the connections are still OK.

Hello got out a schematic troubleshoot from the auto cancel unit and found the reed switch in the speedo shorted out, so I disconnected the auto cancel unit and the signals work properly (manually), so no more auto cancel, it worked like it was supposed to until now. switch is clean (done last year) Thank you for the resonses. Ron - don't feel bad - probably 99% of us don't have the auto cancel anymore, either - it was notorious for failing, and when I rewired my bike, I completely deleted all the wiring for it, since it never worked from the day I got it..... LOL

all i know is this,, I guess I am the .01 % all my friends with new Hondas, Kaws and Harleys,,, all drive around for miles with one of their turn signals on,, (for miles and miles, until we turn the other way, they are usually behind me but it catches my eye none the less) My 77 ride, which we acquired in 1998, the auto cancel turn signals, are a GREAT asset, and i love them and thankful that it still works perfectly... (and how my brain is taxed, to remember to them off, when on the 75 ride) Seems like the new manufactures, should use the same dependable system , at least to me. Preston
