My 82 starter button popped off as I was attempting to start it up after I had just put in a new alt. rotor (that shouldn't be a factor). So I disassembled the button and jumped the button wires (hot to ground) with the key on in neutral... nothing. It's always kicked in. Starter relay? Seems all the wires are good. Battery's good. Didn't mess with anything other than the rotor swap. Ideas?

If you did this with the housing off the bars, then you have no ground. The starter button grounds through the bars over to the other switch housing on the left which picks that up and then grounds into the headlight.
