Well - I got a chance to get some advice from Michael "Mercury" Morse down at 650 Central, when I asked about new exhaust for my 79. I'd told him that I have a mostly stock bike with just K&N filters and lightly ported head - and use it as a daily driver, so I'm not worried about all-out top-end power - more about driveability.
I asked about his Mac 2 - 2 system, and he recommended that I look at headpipes from Mike'sXS, and some Dunstall Wide O's or Reverse cones. Apparently the Macs are a little loud and delivery is "spotty at best" (as he put it!).
Emgo makes Dunstall types (both Wide O & Reverse Cones) that are sold through a bunch of outlets, but I've read some reviews that aren't too happy with the chrome, etc, although they seem happy with the sound.
I see that JC Whitney has Dunstall repops (looks like Wide O's) for $57, but I prefer the Reverse Cones.
Has anyone else tried these and have any comments?

I think Pamco is running reverse cones now. Norm on all of my exhaust from now on I am going to have a Cerma-chrome coating inside and out. In the long run it will be worth the cost. Tony C

I had EMGO Dunstall replica reverse cones for a couple of years but switched to MikesXS Commando mufflers as they work better with the XS Performance Carbs.

Cool, Tony - I'm not going for a showpiece, but if the ceramachrome will keep it from rusting out in 2 years (especially the amount of salt they put on the roads here), it will be worth it.
I read in the reviews at JC Whitney, that many of the users have added additional packing to the Dunstall-style mufflers that they sell... I'm wondering if the Emgos are re-packable, too. Hopefully they are..... That would make it easy to get them ceramachromed then repack them again so the packing doesn't get destroyed.
Pete - how did you like the sound?

ShakerNorm,
Of the EMGO DUNSTALS? They sounded very mellow, especially after initial start. I could sync the carbs (BS34's) just from the sound. I don't like loud mufflers, so they were just right, sounding really cool at the stop lights, but not increasing their "noise" as you accelerated.
The MikesXS Commandos that I have now are a little bit harsher, but still not objectionable. They performed wonders for the XS Performance carbs which work best with freer flowing mufflers.

I'm not one of the 'Loud pipes save lives' crowd either (I prefer to think that driving safer and watching what's happening around me has more to do with it) - not to mention I have a decent rapport with my neighbors, and prefer to keep it that way.....
How do you think the Commandos would be with stock BS38's?

Norm...as soon as I get my wheels re-spoked...maybe Tuesday I'll let you know how they sound. I have a 79, stock carbs, uni air filter and a full new commando exhaust from Mikes....I went 2 up on the mains and pilot and shimmed the needle leaner by half.
Now pamcoate has me thinking of carbs....this was going to be a beater bike for me, I'm spending much to much on it.

Gary - between Pete and a couple others, they've convinced me NOT to change carbs...... LOL
I'm still running the original exhaust, and it still sounds OK, but it looks like it was in the middle of a WW1 artillery barrage.....

I had my brothers exhaust heat-powder coated semi gloss black and it came out awesome. His exhaust was a rusted mess.
They won't rechrome used exhaust pipes because the carbon ruins their tanks. You would be surprised how nice the black exhaust looks.
My wheels are not going to be ready until Friday. When I get them on I can run the bike, I will shoot a vid with my phone and I'll email you it complete with sound.

It's not just the rust, Gary - It went sideways down an Autobahn, been knocked around, beat up and hammered on.... and it looks like it's taken every dent with pride - and still hasn't rusted through... yet....

PM me your email address, I'll shoot a video with sound on my phone and email it to you. The cammando exhaust sounds better than the stock exhaust on my 79. It's throatier and sounds more like a parallel twin. It's not that loud at all even when you get on it, it's on the quieter side...louder than stock though.

I love the sound of my Commandos and highly recommend them. I had the Dunstall reverse cones before this from Whitney. They are junk. The baffles are welded in that version, only the wide mouth version has removable ones. One of mine blew out on the road somewhere, never to be seen again, lol. They don't flow any better than stock and maybe not even as good. The only reason I ran them was because I had them sitting on the shelf. That's where they are again and will probably remain there forever.

here is the link to the Mikesxs Commando exhaust vid I just took with sound www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8HYiWSiO6c The exhaust comes with everything you need, nuts, bolts hangers, exhaust gaskets...complete kit. It's louder than the stock system but it's not loud like the shorty muffler. It sounds now like a parallel twin should. The head pipe is a solid piece of pipe so if you leave your finger prints on them they will blue. First YouTube vid I ever posted and shot it with my cell phone.

Sounds good Gary - Now I just have to get it running properly...... It's got to come apart again this fall so I can pull off the head and fix the valves (both intake and exhaust are leaking on the right side - might explain my lack of power......), but I'm also going to clean up and get the frame painted or powdercoated. Then I'll get the exhaust done, but I think that clinches which one I'll be getting.
