Hi guys, So I have a 1980 xs650. the past couple weeks I was having a charging issue, the bike would break up and misfire after riding awhile then the battery would be dead, So I followed Curly's guide.. I am pretty positive its the result of bad rotor. note: even with bad rotor bike would kick on 1st or 2nd try So I replaced the rotor and now nothing. bike spits and coughs when try to start. I busted my leg kicking it, it felt like timing was 180 and fired on the down stroke then kicker fired back and busted my leg any way I know there is no timing adjustment with the TCI models?? anyone have any suggestions what it might be? thanks nick

I guess the first thing to ask, is the rotor that same one you took off the bike? If not where did you buy it? New or rewound?
2. Did the engine run okay when the new or rewound rotor was first installed? Look at the key to make sure it has not sheared and the rotor is still in time.
3. You've charged your battery, of course.

the other rotor I put on was from a spare motor I had, I believe it tests good.( the ohm reading was all over the place on my cheap multimeter)
I haven't been able to get the bike started with the new rotor in
and the battery is at like 12.05 volts.

!980 and later rotors have a magnet in them which triggers the spark. If your replacement rotor is 1979 or earlier, then you won't get a spark.

I think what you do is buy a rare earth magnet and glue it on. Go to the Forum index and search the electrical posts, or try the search feature. I'm pretty sure this has been covered more than once.

I might be really stupid here but if a rotor from a points engine were fitted to a TCI engine then there'd be no spark at all (no magnet in the rotor to trigger the pickup)? Nick's bike is spitting & popping therefore must be getting a signal from somewhere for the TCI to earth the coils.
My (possibly) twisted logic says make sure your battery is fully charged and then try to start her, XS's don't like a low battery, 12.05 ain't enough. Max

Madmax,
The PAMCO system works all the way down to 6 Volts. Here's a video of the PAMCO driving the 17-6903 "Ultimate" coil from a 6 volt lantern battery:

That's mighty impressive Pete, if and when my Martek finally gives up you'll be getting my business .

On 82,000 volts of spark, you should just about be able to ignite water with it.........

so I jb welded a rare earth magnet to the rotor and the bike fired 2nd kick. broke up a little at first but after a minute idled pretty well. but if I tried to give it any gas it was just break up, wouldn't even really rev..
anyone know what that is? is the magnet on the wrong place on the rotor making the timing off?

A magnet has poles. Did you get the polarity correct?

A magnet has poles. Did you get the polarity correct? I believe soo.. I put the rare earth magnet to the old rotor, my 80 rotor that was faulty which has magnet built in .. I let the magnets just stick to themselves and then jb welded accordingly to the the 78 rotor
