Think'n about toss'n the stock system and look'n at the Mikes Pamco kit.. the $150 unit with coil... for my Xs1. The advance weights.. are a pain six inches below the 5th belt loop. The photo on Mikes website does not show how it's mounted... I did a customers bike (TX) and he had a system that used a long treaded rod with the unit installed on the points side and just a lock'n jam nut (no advance weigths !) on that side. The system was in a box when he dropped it off... the customer had removed it think'n he was going to do the top end job... I was a bit concerned ... he had tossed the directions some time ago... but it was a easy install.. the only problem was finding the spark at TDC ... so.. does this Mikes unit use the stock points rod and toss the weights..?... Thanks for you time..

The Pamco uses the stock advance weight assembly and the stock advance rod.
Maybe the customer's TX had a Boyer. I'm not really familiar with the Boyer, but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't use the stock advance, it advances electronically.

Motormike, check out www.probe-eng.com . The Probe ignition is about the same price as the Boyer; it doesn't come with a coil, but the Gill coil that Boyer supplies is a throw-away anyhow. Advance is electronic--no ATU. Once the advance setting has been dialed in, retard timing can be trimmed in 1/2 degree increments forward or back, and set wherever you want it (default is the stock 25* interval between advance and retard). The Probe system, in addition to a lot of other trick features, has an LED that turns off when the ignition sparks, and lets you static time before firing up and strobing in. It's made in America by Mark Whitebook, a long-time XS650 enthusiast and all-around great guy.

I too have Mark's unit on my XS650SE 1978 - 270 re-phase and it was pure plug and play. Never had any issues with spark. No more advance unit to wear. He sets them up for what ever crank you use, standard, 277 or 270. Thanks to Mark for such a great upgrade.

I thought I kept pretty informed on new products but that is the first time I have heard of this ignition. Has he been in business long. Must not do a lot of advertising. Have a Boyer now but think the plate is a little flimsy but not problems so far. jtc

Mike - yeah it sounds like it had a Boyer or Probe ignition - electronic advance built in, so it doesn't need the stock mechanical advance system. Pete's system still needs the mechanical advance. Preston got you the link to Pete.

Mark has been making the Probe ignition for around 18 years, constantly refining it. The design and detail are remarkable, makes the Boyer look like caveman stuff. The timing plate is half again thicker than the Boyer plate, and it sits in the bottom of the ignition housing, where it's solidly supported. The trigger rotor mounts outboard, over the timing plate; the magnets are mounted on a collet that's inserted into the camshaft. When the screw in the collet is tightened it expands, locking the rotor in place.
Mark designed the first Probe system for the XS650, but for some reason Probe is better known in vintage Honda circles.
