I have some 6 agw wire and toying with the idea of making a set of battery jumper cables 5 feet long. Think a pair of 6 guage wire would be enough to handle cranking amp. for that length?

Yes they should do nicely for a motorcycle. Perhaps not so great for a car. My ATV has a winch run with #6 wire and I'll bet my XS650 battery cables are exactly that. I have a set of jumper cables (#6) that came in a car kit, cheapies about 8' long, that I use for motocycle jumpers and they work great. Nice and light compared to the heavier car types.

I made a pair with 12ga wire for a one time use on a buddies xs850. He ended up keeping them with his bike. They worked good.
