Any good tips on how to remove the plastic bushings. I want to use heat but don't want to leave residue in the tube. The plastic is in bad shape and crumbles when I try to work with it. The book recommends using a punch but I fear that might scratch the tube. Any help is appreciated.

I used a piece of pipe. I've removed several sets and all tapped out quite easily without needing to resort to heat or cutting.

Aftre trying a pipe end, which would slip off for me..,,,, I took a " thread chaser" (that would go through a nut to clean out the threads) ,,, screwed it in the plastic bushing, and then from the other side, used an old extension, to knock it out,, 1 minute for each side. a hardware store should have that, I do not know the size... but i had an old one laying around, so it cost nothing.
