Mine is 33 years old now, and 28 of those were in the ownership of someone in the Military (I'm the 3rd owner - and all of us were in the Air Force)..... It started in Canada, got posted to Germany, got dropped on an Autobahn, taken apart for repairs, shipped back to Canada in boxes, then rebuilt again, and now I'm midway through "restoring" it (with a few more or less minor improvements).
Last year I bought an XJ1100 so I could ride while I have the XS apart, but I'm still not sure if I'll bother keeping the XJ when I've got the XS back on the road. Yeah - it's faster, more "high-tech", a LOT smoother, bigger, and maybe even more comfy - but it just doesn't have that stupid grinning "DAMN-THIS IS FUN" factor of the XS.......

I don't know about the law but having anything you care about riding in front of you is just plain stupid. In an emergency stop even if you don't hit anything or fall down what happens to what is in front of you? It flies right over the handle bars and lands in front of you so you can run over it. Stupid. The XJ1100 is one of the world's best motorcycles -EVER. It is my experience that multiple motorcycles amplify the experience. Every time to go from one to another you appreciate both of them more.
Keep it.

Keep it. I agree with the multiple bike philosophy. My daily is a '80 XS850SG Special. Done all the appropriate upgrading to make it better. The three cylinder has a certain attraction as well. But it's my pack horse. Big krauser trunk, runs great, can do highway time when needed.... But my 650 is purely for fun. Nothing like it. Runs like a train, with a ton of personality. Everytime I ride it after a week of commuting on the big 850 I can't believe how much I truly enjoy it. I've been thinking lately of selling both and replacing with a newish Moto-Guzzi V7 Stone in the spring. Great bike that will adequately fill the roll of both Yamaha's. But then I ride my 650 and the desire for change fades.

I've had a few "better" bikes come and go, but the XS650 is the one that sticks around. I remember my last ride on the XS750 thinking to myself, "Why am I getting rid of this bike? It is so much nicer than the 650 in every way." It may have been nicer but it never made me smile like the XS650.
