Today, April26,'12 ... I went online to Mike's and to 650central to order up a starter repair kit ( #4 gear; clip;spring ) to repair my '78 650SE's noisy starter. I have read hundreds of posts here and I'm pretty sure that will cure my starter problems . As of today, NEITHER Mike's OR 650central carries it . I see that Mike's offshoot ( 650 Connection ? ) in Canada has it, but it says on their site for American customers to purchase through Mike's . Does anyone know where I can buy this kit ? Thanks !

Today, April27,'12... I went to Mike's via a link from this site and the starter repair kit I'm looking for has a listing and an announcement that he's out of the kits, and doesn't know when he'll have them. Yesterday, I went directly to his site and the listing for the repair kit wasn't even shown ... I swear ... I don't even drink anymore . So ... I'm still needing some help here locating a kit .

You might find new wish bone springs on Ebay. I found some. Cost more for shipping than the springs cost. I would try squeezing the spring tighter. It might work, if not you just wasted some time and an oil change. Leo

" 5twins ", "xsleo" ... thanks for the tips. My 650SE has the larger clip which I might be able to bend without removing the clutch basket as 5twins link suggested . I might, come winter, want to change that #4 gear and depending on the condition of the starter, that as well, but I want to ride this season and save the mechanical stuff till snow flies . The very words, "clutch basket " are intimidating ... I have this mental picture of a basket of snakes, Rubik's Cube mess of metal parts that will certainly come out of the bike easy enough, but I'll need a team of rocket scientists to re-install . One of these days, I'll have a garage and another 650, so that between the 2 of them, I'll always have a ride available . Let this one thing be said ... I always appreciate someone taking their time to answer a question . Thanks again !

If you are careful when pulling the clutch apart to keep things in order, it goes back together easy enough. Take lots of pics as it comes apart, helps on the back together part. Lots of help on here if you have trouble. Leo
