Hello all, Just wondering if my 77-XS650-D Rear Shocks rebuildable. I have the forks apart right now. Cleaning them up. More like sanding for ever.
Anyway, thought I might try rebuilding the rear shocks if it was do-able. Are there parts available? Do they even come apart?
Thanks, Slimbob

I think you can take the springs off, that's all. They can't be rebuilt to my knowledge.

Thanks 5twins. I guess replacement is in order for the winter project this year. I have plenty of projects for the summer.
Polishing fork lowers right now. Hope to have them back together this W.E. Alot of elbo grease and ibprofen. Ha!

I had a 1959 D.O.T. Scrambler. The front end used very long shocks that were unobtainable and the stockers were way past being worn out. A friend ended up buying the bike and he drilled small holes in the shock body at the bottom. The shocks were filled with 10w-30 and sheet metal screws sealed the holes. So shade tree but worked out well in this case. I hope everyone enjoys this story. Since you can find new shocks, buying a new set is the only way to go.

Reminder to old folks, and FYI to new folks... If you buy those somewhat inexpensive rear shocks, (Monza? ) from a mail order source in Florida,,, Please note, you would be better off cutting 1/2" bar stock, and drill holes at each end, for a smoother ride. and save your money. Preston

Yes, cheapo shocks are just that. All they do is look like shocks, lol.

I broke down and put Progressives on the rear of mine - and did the Minton Mods and cartridge emulators on the front. WHAT a difference!
