I just installed a PMA from Mikes and a PAMCO ignition. Never ran better! I still need to check the timing. I scribed the TDC marks per the instructions. Question is Where should I adjust the firing point? Exactly at TDC?

I have a MRRiggs inspired hybred PMA and a PAMCO ignition. What I do is make TDC and full advance marks (see below, cut from www.gofastforless.com/junk/Per-Mag-Alt-Instructions.pdf) and static set timing at full advance. I position the PAMCO unit so that I get spark at the full-advance mark aligned with the mark on the rotor and the PAMCO unit twisted by hand to its full advance position. You'll be in the ballpark when you put the PAMCO on, since the leads exiting the housing naturally position the unit to pretty close to where it needs to be. With the plugs out and resting on the fins (caps attached/switches on) use a box wrench or some such on the rotor bolt to turn the motor over to find out where it is firing. Once you get it static timed you can check it with a timing light. Making timeing marks There is a flange at the bottom of the inspection cover opening. Beneath the flange is a notch in the case. Make a mark on the flange directly above the right side of the notch. This will be your Top Dead Center mark. Make another mark 0.5 inches to the left of the TDC mark. This is the 15° initial timing mark which is equivalent to the “F” mark on breaker point bikes, and the “Д mark on TCI bikes. The 40° total advance point is on the left side where the flange meets thecase.

Like burns says, time the engine with a light at 40° full advance. Grizld gave a great tip when he said you can mount a timing disk on the end of the crank with a plastic wall anchor and screw. The rest is generic mechanics.

Would like to get this right as I'm set up the same way, time it to full advance NOT Top dead center? What is the advantage from either or?

If you have the TDC mark all that does is show you when the pistons are at TDC. The idle timing is 12-15 degrees before TDC. You should also make a mark for the idle timing as well as for full advance. Now as Pamcopete says in the instuctions set the Pamco with the screw centered in the slot. This will get it running. Now with it running use a timimng light to shoot the marks. If the timing off loosen the screws and rotate the Pamco till they aling. Now rev the engine while watching the marks. The rotor mark should move over to the left and reach the full advance mark but not go past. If it goes past reset the idle timing retarded a bit and retest the full advance.Once you get it set then your golden. Ride and enjoy. Leo
