I'm looking to get one of these Cheney Engineering Vintage: Non-Adjustable Wide Tree Fork Clamps for my scrambler project. www.cheneyengineering.com/forkclamps.shtml They come in 7 5/8" wide tree vs 8 1/2" wide tree. I'm not sure which one to get and how they would effect the ride or handling. I'm leaning towards getting the 7 5/8" because I think that should probably be closer to the stock size, and wouldn't want to change appearance too drastically. Could anyone offer a suggestions?

Why not the stock clamp? It's not only the width but the spacers will need to be changed. That's the easy part. The offset from the steering pin centerline will determine trail. More offset will mean less trail and easier steering and less stability. Less offset the opposite.
The clamp does look good!

I'm planning on selling my 77 XS650 to finance Cheney Engineering frame and other parts for a scrambler/desert sled project. I'm trying to reduce the weight as much as possible with lighter frame, lighter fork clamps, and lighter wheels. If I recall correctly the frame is only like 17 lbs, and the fork clamps are also much lighter than the stock ones. I'm undecided on the which width for the fork clamp to order.

It depends on what size tire you run. With the 110 tire I have on mine clearance is limited on the stock trees. Like tom said on the handling. I would buy one that will give you off set and tire clearance of your choice.

Give Jerry a call and he will tell you exactly what size of tire you can run but be prepared to listen and listen long as he likes to talk and will give you tons of info especially if you bought one of his frames. I have a set of 7 1/4" Betor clamps on on my flattracker and run a 27.0 x 19" front Dunlop and doubt that your tire would be wider. I have about 1/8" clearance on each side. Post some pics once you have a roller. P.S: Jerry's clamps are top shelf. ....Mel....

And still one of the fastest guys in vintage flattrack except he has said he has retired. Personally, I doubt it. He'll be back on a green framed Honda wearing his tan work gloves. ....Mel....
