Marty
The "go-to" brand of paintstripper here in the UK used to be Nitromors, that's until the EU banned the use of dicloromethane, the original was the colour & consistency of wallpaper paste and would shift anything, it even made blue chemical resistant nitrile rubber gloves wrinkle, the version on sale now is a green gel and doesn't work. Is Nitromors available over there? It might be the original formula if your environment Nazis haven't banned it?

It was Klean Strip and dichloromethane is the active ingredient. It is the color and consistency of wallpaper paste and ate my blue nitrile gloves in half a second. There was a reaction going on in the tank. I know because when I put a rubber bung in the filler hole to coat the entire inside, it built up pressure in a big hurry. I cleaned the mess out of there and most of the tank liner remains. I have not seen the Nitromors brand, but I suspect it is the same as what I used.

I've run out of suggestions Marty, give the MEK a go but please be careful, it's nasty stuff, you could possibly try xylene based thinners or maybe acetone?

I will be a couple weeks before I get back to it, but I'll keep you posted.

I put a gallon of acetone in the tank this afternoon. The liner is dissolving! I put the paint at risk from paint stripper for no good reason. I hope it's OK under there.

Well Max, the only issue is what kind of liner you have. It looks to me that I'm removing something different than what was in the tank in the magazine. Acetone is less of a threat to quality than dichloromethane paint stripper, and less expensive. Based on the experience I'm having, acetone is the first solvent to try.

We need Harbor freight here in the UK, you Yanks are lucky to be able to buy anything & everything from a large shed on the outskirts of every large town, just so long as they remember that Harbour should have a "U" in the name, Max

I just put about 3 lbs of this in the tank. Then I packed it into my wife's dryer and let it spin for more than two hours. I now have a tank with a lot of what looks like brown talcum powder in it. I am going to call that success. Next, I'll rinse it out and give it the phosphoric acid treatment. Once that is complete, I have to decide whether to go with Preston's bare metal tank, or install a liner.

Hi Here in the UK we have found with the classic trial bikes we use if you leave the fuel tank with not a lot of petrol in , It will start rusting on the inside What I do is drain the tank and leave the cap open so the tank can vent then you don’t get any rusting problems and try to leave it near full if you use the bike a lot, we used to have A lot of fiberglass tanks but they have all rotted away with this rubbish that is call petrol This ethanol is a real pain here in the UK . I removed all of the rust with diluted phosphoric acid. It worked the charm. The Caswell liner is in there now and looks like a coat of glass. I hope it works because there will be no removing it.
