Maryland is far away, but many attendees come from farther.

Yo Marty, A couple of questions. First off, Iron Horse sent me a form to fill out for dinner selection. Do the guys usually eat there all three days (I'm arriving Thursday PM), or should I leave an evening or two open for dinner elsewhere? And second, do you know if the Cherohala is looking good, or should I plan on another route (I'm planning to exit I24 at McMinnville and run secondary roads to the Cherohala, then east to Stecoah)? If the weather continues to look decent I'll ride in, if it the forecast gets ugly I'll trailer. See you in Stecoah!

We will be dining at the lodge. I plan to be there on Thursday. I have yet to try the meatloaf. ;D
One lane of the Cherohala is closed due to the landslide. Repairs are scheduled to be completed by 13 June.

Aw, crap. Any idea where and how long the 1-lane stretch is? I did a search but couldn't come up with details. If it amounts to very much I'll plan another route.

As far as I know there was a 50 foot long section of the road that slid down the mountain. I wouldn't expect the one lane section to be very long. I wouldn't think the traffic would back up on a week day. You need to ride it so you can report to us about just how bad it is. ;D Graham County is dry, so anyone coming needs to keep that in mind when you pack.

Hi Marty,
If you look at the first map you can see the Cades Cove loop road in the Smokies. After driving about 10-12 hours my wife, first kid and I got caught in a traffic jam because it was leaf weekend. We didn't know this, I thought it was off-season. Driving on the loop, there is a maintenance road and off the maintenance road is a fire road that runs over to Rt. 129. I was really stupid and took that road to leave the park. A Jeep followed but was able to turn back early. I was afaid to stop, the trail was very steep and there wasn't a hint of a pull off. Eventually the fire road ended at Rt. 129. Here I was, totally spent from putting my family in danger and driving a Cutlass with sways, shocks, wide sticky tires and a cornering alingment. I hit that wonderful road and had a blast. I don't think anyone called it the Dragon back then.

The Cherohala Skyway has been reopened to through traffic. NCDOT worked to get a single lane opened around the damaged area. Thanks to all who made this happen.

Marty and grizald, have a good time. Its not too far, just too much stuff going on here. Have to pull clutch cover off to replace the shim under the tach drive shaft, since it came out in my oil change. Thanks to Preston's sharp eye. We found out what it was. I will be on the BRP this summer.

Preston, if it's any consolation, I didn't make it either. My gut kept telling me to ride the SV650 Suzuki, but pride goeth before a fall, and I rode the Yam. Due to weather, I planned a stop at McMinnville, TN, about 280 miles into the 460 mile trip. At Paducah, KY, about 70 miles from home, the voltage meter showed below battery voltage with the headlight on; but with the headlight off, it came up to 15V at speed. I almost turned around and went back for the Zook; but I figured there'd be no more than a wiring issue I could resolve pretty easily, so I pressed on with the headlight off. At McMinnville, I gave the alternator a visual inspection. In the Sparx setup, the 6 mm. screws that mount the stock stator are used to mount the adapter plate and are then hidden by the stator. Although secured with blue Loctite, those screws had loosened, allowing the rotor and stator to make contact. No improvement in charging occurred when I tightened up and reset the air gap, so I headed home. The only thing I can give myself credit for is packing the necessary tools. It's worth noting here that the stock stator is supported by the blades cast into the crankcase, so that the two 6 mm. screws give adequate and reliable support. My old alternator is coming out of the stash and going back in service.
Marty, hope you're having a great time!
