OK, Grizzled I'm up for that. If you just want to discuss nothing but stock bikes you should make that clear somewhere on the forum. In the beginning motorcycles had rigid frames without suspension and some folks have a desire to go that route. We don't all have to follow your thoughts on what is proper or not. If you check my age(65)and the number of bikes I've built/restored you will see that I've paid my dues as well. I've rebuilt stock bikes, chopped, bobbed and built custom bikes. We all go through different stages in our lives. I was a member of this forum back in '04/'05 and it was a great place to get help and answers without the I know it all attitude and getting your head ripped or being belittled. Young folks are full of vim/vigor and are impatient to get things done so they sometimes ask questions without spending hours searching the web first. I was taught that EVERYONE (even young people) have something to offer. I was taught there are no STUPID questions. Young folks sometimes do stupid things and that's called "life" that's how we learn. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. - Will Rogers
And so we're back to the question of whether or not this is a "Dead Forum." Well, in my opine Grizzled has made it very clear this forum is open only to those who are man enough and willing to be belittled by a group of expert know-it-alls. That it's not open to the lowest common denominator and if you're building anything other than a pure stock XS650 it's a "Dead Forum."

So we're back to that line that you're either a Sawzall artist or a purist, are we? Just to put things straight, my own XS650D is a long way from stock--Race Tech emulators, Traxxion Dynamics fork springs, Works Performance custom alloy body shocks, TM36/68 4-stroke flat slide pumpers, 77.5 mm. JE pistons in silicon carbide treated bores by Bore Tech, hollow rear axle, 11 mm. Brembo MC, Vesrah sintered pads, Brembo floating rotor, Daytona tweak bar, plastic front fender and chain guard, TX750 swingarm (thanks for the tip, 5twins), and a few other tweaks. My personal take on customization is that there are things that improve function and things that turn a motorcycle into a fashion accessory good for posing in front of the bar on and very little else. As to the inexperienced asking the same questions over and over without looking around first: How are they going to learn if they expect to be spoon fed?
As to the forum not being open to folks who can't take criticism, you're here, right? Nobody's edited your posts, or threatened to ban you, or anything like that. You haven't contributed anything constructive since you registered, but nobody's going to keep you from having your say.

Dead... I hope not.... I have been helped by many to solve issues I was stumped at. I ck it often... and still pick up gems and pass them along to others usually at social settings. My Xs bikes are together and have not developed any "gremlins".... newer riders can still learn from the discoveries others have made.

You’ve probably heard the joke about the six year-old boy who had yet to say a word…..
One morning at the kitchen table with his mother he said: “Mom this cocoa really stinks!” Of course, his mother was very excited and said, “Joey! You’re finally talking. Why haven't you said a word for six years?”
Joey replied, "Well, up until now everything’s been pretty good!"
That's pretty much how I see this forum. Not a lot of chit-chat and a search will reveal that most questions have already been answered. These bikes have been around for over 40 years, there is not a lot to say about them that hasn't already been said.

Good for you, Preston! The best riding of the year is fall after the leaves are down and spring before the leaves are out--you can see through the corners and pitch 'er over!

I am one of those admins remiss in my duties. Don't come around here very often anymore, mostly because I have always relied on this site as a technical resource and everything's been pretty well answered (as someone else already pointed out). Still, it's a very good forum with a good group of like minded individuals. As you can see from my Avatar, I'm one of those that has chosen to modify my XS. As it was a "shed" find that I restofied into a daily rider some 13 years ago and then about 3 years ago into a weekend duty cafe' I'm very comfortable with what it's become. My daily rider is now a 1980 XS850 Special that's almost entirely stock and will remain that way. I tend to regularly frequent the triples site as well as DTT as they are more relevent to my current lifestyle. I still love this place though, and hope to be a part of it for years to come. Because of this site, my XS has been road worthy for over 13 years for me, and runs like a train. What more can you ask for! Will try to stop by more often too.
Matt

The difference between this board and the others is about the same as the difference between the Library of Congress and the magazine rack at your favorite barber shop. You want chit-chat (nothing wrong with that) you know where to go. If you have a serious XS 650 Yamaha related issue you also know where to go. If you need to be told where to go ... well you get the drift.
As to hard-tail OCC type stuff (lawn art) Well, the bright side is that those folks are reducing the available inventory and thereby (probably) adding to the value of the XS market generally.
I often think that the "gold" here should be edited into the XS Bible.
All I can say after several years of fairly regular attendance is: thank you all very, very much I hope I die before you do, cause I'd hate to miss ya.

Charlie , HTFU . It goes along with not being "new". Dick , rare form as usual although the one thing I won't argue with is "sawzall". Jack , Mike , Marty , ofttimes moderation is best when none at all .
Then this ...
"All I can say after several years of fairly regular attendance is: thank you all very, very much I hope I die before you do, cause I'd hate to miss ya."
All of you .

Boy, hope this isn't a dead forum. Just started lurking these XS forums a few months ago, probably 8-9 years behind the power curve, lots of catching up to do, massive tech/thread database here.
For some reason, this particular forum doesn't work well on my tablet. Can't multi-tab windows to save bandwidth and cross-reference. Sometimes portions of the screen blank-out, and have to back-scroll to refresh. Navigation is a bit of a challenge. Not sure what to do in the 'shoutbox'.
Guess I've been trained/spoiled by the 'other' forum. Still gonna give this one a try...

Charlie, in the thread you are referring to you said you hardtailed a bike then you asked how to make it ride well. Then I asked "If you wanted a good ride, why hardtail it?" I then said "to get a good ride put the shocks and swingarm back on it." That's when I said you built the bike for the look. Am I wrong on this? Most times getting a cool looking bike means you have to sacrifice something to get it. In this case you will sacrifice ride for the hard tail look. And as I said deal with it. It was your choice to build the bike you want. You asked for an opinion and I gave you one. If it wasn't the response you wanted to hear how is that my problem. Leo
