I'm converting to a rear disc brake on my '81. I've purchased a stock caliper and bracket from a '79. I understand how the bracket is attached, but what I don't understand is how things clamp-up at the axel. When the axel is tightened, is the caliper bracket clamped hard between the frame and the wheel bearing? Are there any spacers between the frame and bracket or the bearing and bracket? I can not locate any decent photos or fiche that shows clearly how this assembly works.

I may be wrong but I don't believe Yamaha xs650s came with a disk brake on a spoked rear wheel. They only came on Mag wheels. There are posts in this forum talking about this. Some folks have tried different brand bike rear wheels but it isn't easy. There is also a problem with where to mount the master cylinder and the rear swing arm has to be changed as well.

I believe the only difference to the swing arm is the brackets to attached the brake line and the rear stay. Speaking of the rear stay, can anyone tell me the hole-to-hole length of a stock disc brake stay? There are a bunch on eBay, but few state whether the stay was from a bike with a disc brake. If I new the length of the stock disc brake stay, I would only have to ask for the length. I could also make one myself from the old drum brake stay.

Yeah, for the stay on a disk brake it mounts to the swing arm on top. The master cylinder has a boss in the frame which the bolts go through and another on one of the braces for reservoir. I swapped from mag wheels to spoke wheels and the easiest way for me was to get a different swing arm. Since then I built another bike so I swapped back.

If I were to replace my swing arm with the disc brake type which has all the brackets, will any swing arm and stay rod from a 1979 work?
Did all 1979 XS650 Specials come with a rear disc brake?
