Hi, I have pretty low compression, around 90 on both cylinders even though I have new rings so I am thinking I need a oversize piston and cylinder bore. Instead of pulling apart the engine now, I thought I would just buy a cylinder on ebay and a set of pistons and have it bored out. Then when I decide to do the engine work, I'll be all ready to go, a quick turn and I can be back riding. Anyway, what cylinders will fit a 1979 engine?

You can use anything from 1972 (XS2) forward (XS1 and XS1B gasket surfaces are different). But before you buy new cylinders and pistons, consider having a leakdown test done to make sure your compression loss isn't through the valves.

Yeah, I've done that, I just had a valve job done. Still at 90. I do have one question though, can I get a good enough reading by kicking over the engine vice using the starter?

Yep, just be sure to hold the throttle wide open while you kick.
