Greetings.
At the ripe old age of almost 70, I am beginning my first motorcycle build, a 1982 XS 650 Heritage Special that will be turned into a street tracker. I have owned and used bikes for 56 years, currently own 8 of them, all running except for the XS650, but having little mechanical knowledge or aptitude, I have shied away from a ground-up build. Now being retired, and caretaking two ailing parents 20 years older than me, it's time to take the leap.
I will have many questions, most of which will seem stupid to those of you with knowledge, aptitude, and experience, but I am hopeful that the zeal for sharing good advice will prevail over the need to pound forehead against wall. Hey, I've lived a long time - it takes more than a little ridicule to get me on the run!
Operational bikes in the current stable include:
2014 Vespa 300 GTV
1941 Triumph 350 (runs and drives beautifully!)
2011 Royal Enfield C5 Chrome
1998 Moto Guzzi Centauro Sport, rare and Concours condition
2003 BMW R1150RS fully kitted up for long distance
2007 Triumph Thruxton 900, dolled up
2014 HD Deluxe CVO, also dolled up
I'm aiming to transform the XS650 into a kind of hooligan-style tracker, similar to the Mule and River Rat style. The engine work has already been done by Limey Bikes in Austin, Texas - it's been converted to a 707 with a Shell 1 cam and brand new Mikuni VM34s. It has never been started since the rebuild, but it just about ready to be put into the cleaned-up and trimmed frame for a mock-up.
I look forward to joining the group, with all due apologies for the fact that I'll be the one with all the questions and none of the answers...
Cheers,
S.
