I think that I read a thread on VW tappet adjusters - I think that these are the what was meant. They're off some Posche or other and are being listed on Ebay at £25 per pair for XT / SR 500's - ouch! They are a mini ball joint and are supposed to give better contact with the valve tip. I know that a few Triumph tuners use elephants feet adjusters like these. Has anybody tried them in an XS? Cheers Tony

Some of the VW ones actually have a small ball bearing in the tip. I know someone here uses them, I just can't remember who. the rocker arm has to be cut down a bit too as the tips of these tappett adjusters are longer that the stock ones and cannot screw up into the rocker arm...Really good VW ones should be cheaper than 25...

David Rayner had a post in Member's Motors about this tappet. The quote below is from his post:
"However, I did install "elephant's foot" tappets from a Porsche which have a ball and socket to actuate the valve. This eliminates the sliding action of a regular tappet across the valve tip as the rocker swings through it's arc. Thus, valve tip wear and the tendency for the valve to want to go askew as it's pushed down through the guide are a thing of the past. "
He hasn't replied to my inquiry for a part number or engine make. However, he did say to grind 4mm from the bottom of the rocker.
I would be interested to know if you find the part. This looks like another must do project.

The Australian SR500 Club website recommends using Porsche PN 90110537002 for their SR500's. Since the SR500 and XS650 use the same Valve Adjuster Screw (PN 293871-001), it could be assumed that the referenced Porsche PN can be used in the XS650. The Rockers are not that same however. The description of the Mods to the SR500 Rocker Arm sound much the same as that for the XS650. A picture would tell a thousand words though. www.sr500club.org/tech.htm#porsche

The Porsche and VW after market adjusters are different. Depending on the manufacturer the VW are only about $20.00 for 8 (Berg are more expensive) Its probably worth buying a copy of VW Action magazine and checking out the ads. (you can get it in most supermarkets, etc) PJ

This is interesting. The way the "foot" fills with oil and pretty much stays in contact with the valve at all times, eliminating noise, is way cool. This would probably allow us to run the larger clearances without the valve clatter that we were talking about in that other thread. Mashermoto, let us know what all you have to do to make them work. Grind 4mm off the rocker? Shorten the overall length of the new adjuster and cut a new screw slot? Inquiring minds want to know .

Your know what they say about great minds... ;D Motomasher, I'd be interested too, to see how this all works out and just what is necessary (mods to the rockers, etc) to fit the elephant foot adjusters. Inquiring minds want to know. Cheers, Dan

There wasn't any pressure into them, they just filled up with oil draining from valve gear down pushrod tubes. Don't think the Porsche adjusters have an oil feed but the VW has pressure feed through rocker arm PJ

what about weight?its hard to tell from just a pic,but i would think that they might weigh twice as much as a stock adjuster.i know that they will be trimed down some, but weight in the valve train aint good.maybe if a person would be able to trim down some weight off the rockers as well. has any one done this?..............snuffy

Hey... Thanks PJ ! I tried placing an order this evening, but I keep getting an error message that the site does not recognize my country information. This is a problem I deal with on occasion out here. Anyone want to help me out? Here's what I propose: I'll send you $25 in the mail. You then make the purchase. When you receive them, you mail 4 pieces to me and you keep the other 4 pieces. Sound fair? PM me if your interested. Dan

These could be the cheapest yet. I wish I could find some in the UK. If anybody wants to order some, I'll gladly swap for some big sockets final drive sprocket and clutch centre since they seem to be expensive over there. I can get good quality Eclipse 1/2 drive for about £2 each. www.pap-parts.com/prodinfo.asp?number=901%20105%20370%2002Tony
