Hey, I just found out what happens when you pull the starter off without draining the oil first. What a big, stinkin' mess. What in the hell was I thinking? OK, don't answer that. If I HAD been thinking, I would have just put the starter right back in and drained the oil, but nooooo, I had to let it ALL drain out onto the floor so I could watch it ooze all over. Then I had to step in it so I could track it all over the garage. Of course I didn't have any oil dry or kitty litter on hand so I proceeded to use up a very large supply of clean shop rags. How stupid can I be? Don't answer that either.
Make me feel better and tell me you guy's have done similar or worse. I know Chopperbbad has.

Mental, don't feel too bad, I did the exact same thing yesterday. Although, I knew the oil would come out and on to the floor, I put down some cardboard, drain pan and oil dry and STILL made the big mess. Ah well, Cheers, 50gary

Mental, here's one for the stupid file, I parked my bike and walked away without putting the side stand down. Did it right there while the whole wide world watched it fall on it's side. Very expensive mistake.

Check this dumb trick!!!!! 29 years ago bought my first bike a 350 Honda off a friend. Spent a whole week in the school yard learning how to ride. Went over to show my friend how well I could ride and pulled up infront of his house, with him sitting on a lawn chair and forgot to put my legs down and fell over. Right out of laugh-in ;D ;D Bob

Hey Mental,
If it makes you feel better I figured I leave the oil in as long as I could on a piston replacement project because I wanted to flush it a couple of times anyway. Sooooo with the head and cylinders off I proceeded to clean the motor. All fine and dandy until I got around to the bottom, tilted the motor towards it's front, and cleaned around the oil pan and such for a good three minutes until I felt the oil dripping down my leg.
Hope it made you feel better cause just writing down made me feel dumber.
Cheers, Roar

Well, how about leaving the drain plug out and pouring 2 quarts in the filler and then... ..starting the engine to check for leaks! Fortunately, the catch pan was still under the bike.... ;D

All this talk about oil. As I begin the rebuild of my motor which I ran out of oil, I'm not feeling any better here. Funny stuff, tho. Cafefill

Fortunately, the catch pan was still under the bike.... ;D I just did this exact same thing last week. Didn't start the bike, but poured in 2 quarts of oil while the drain plugs were out. Sheesh! My dad did that with his car last weekend. I got in from work and he starts telling me how he went to change the oil but did something stupid, and I said, wait.. let me guess, you left the drain plug off when you refilled it. Exactly! At least the XS doesn't take that much oil. He had to toss it because it mixed with the old oil in the drain pan, which had antifreeze in it (head gasket blew).

I've done a few of thes things (left drain plug off, didn't tighten oil cooler hose clamps, one time I even wrestled off an oil bag from a cb750 only to realize with a crotch full of oil that you have to drain it seperatly from the engine) but the only thing that tops it is, I was at my buddies garage and changing the oil, came up a little short so I snagged his 5gal oil jug and topped it off. turns out that what wasn't used antifreeze was used ATF (somehow the color came out right to look like oil). That was a crappy walk to the autozone.
