Just a quick check to see if there has been any progress on figuring this out. I just found a source for a bunch of full Banshee setups locally and am just wondering if I should pull the trigger, and exactly what I will really need to be able to run this. Most of the info that I have been able to find so far, including the xs650.org.au site above is just a little incomplete to go and make the deal happen. Thanks for working so hard to get this mod to work and get the info to us!

I've been following this thread for a while and I'm finally forced to show my ignorance - what's a Banshee? Does anybody know if us Brits got an equivalent? I presume that it's a two stroke twin of some description, is it related to the RD / LC's?
Please put me out of my misery.

Here's your Banshee. Yamaha has been making these for years. Yes, it is a 2 stroke twin, but I'm not certain how similar the engine would be to the RD/LC models.

Thanks for that, at least I won't die wondering. It seems to have two spare wheels. Is it air or water cooled? Not much point hunting around our breakers for one of them.

Yes, it is liquid cooled. The Radiator is that big-ugly black thing beneath the handle bars.

Sorry, no progress. Haven't found a stator yet. Haven't really been looking. Last few weeks has been all about buying a house. We were supposed to sign the papers this week but someone along the line is dragging their feet. Very frustrating process. I just want it to be over so I can move into my big new finished garage. Getting married in a couple weeks so it may be a while till I can get back to the bike.
Looking at the link 17mmspanner posted I can see one issue I didn't consider before. I doesn't look like the ignition trigger pickup will fit under the stock cover. So either the cover will need to be modified [cut a relief in it] or the pickup will have to be mounted under the points cover. The banshee has a 180 degree firing order so it would be better to run it off the cam anyway. I have an idea for a reluctor conversion that is even cheaper and easier than using Toyota parts... cough, cough, wing-nut.

I have a stator and flywheel on the way. battery is going bye bye. I am a little worried about the power output for lights though. I may be going for the toyota conversion as well...

Well I'm a happy boy. Postman brought my stator and flywheel today. Still need to get some aluminum for the backing plate. I also picked up a toyota distributor.

I am watching this with baited breath... I will leave no stone unturned in the quest for maximum XS performance... If this works, I will be so jazzed! The electricals on the XS are the last weak link to assault! Modern, readily available parts!!! Way to go!

Picked up some aluminum today from metal supermarket and went at it. I got 4 8X10 sheets of 3/16 plate for half price since they were too small for most people to use. Cut the plate to the specs on this page: www.xs650.org.au/Alternators.htmhere are the pictures: www.flickr.com/photos/kuangmk11/sets/72157600180624786/Cutting like that really sucks... My next project after this bike is to build a sieg x3 cnc mill. Everything works like it should. I mounted the stator so the wires were close to the exit hole so the pickup is in a random spot. I didn't bother with the woodruff key since I will be triggering off the cam. I haven't put the cover on yet but I'm pretty sure it fits(as soon as the pickup is removed). I am still trying to figure out how I am gonna trigger the ignition. I think I would prefer to do it the Toyota or Mallory way since I have never had a vehicle with points (for long ). I am sticking with the AC/no battery setup and I don't know which method is better suited to that. Ignitions are not my strong point so any recommendations or thought are defiantly welcome!

I went ahead and cut off the pickup and put the cover back on. No Troubles. I did some wiring tests and set up a basic points ignition but couldn't get any fire. I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

pdxs, you are right across the river from me. If you need help wiring I could probably find time to help you. Maybe we can trade, an ignition system for one of those adapter plates?
