GEN Xer here, 33 , the real deal. Used to have long scraggly hair, listen to angry music and wear flannels. Still wear the flannels, but the hair is going, going , gone and mostly the music is pretty tame now. Still crank up the Nirvana once in a while. Grew up on bikes and my dad owned a yammie shop for a short while when I was growing up. I still remember looking through those old adds in his bike mags and thinking, man I like those 650 Specials! Well now I finally own one, and wish I'd done it along time ago and not wasted my time on all the crap I had inbetween. The Special's styling doesn't appeal to me like it did back then, but wow, love the standards.

Six, you aint no Xer. Lemme do the math here (subtract 74, add 3, carry the 9, divide by pi) Heck no, you aint no Xer. Disco wasn't angry. Bad, yes, but not angry. The horrible hammerin' and screamin' and head bashin' came after disco. No little deuce coupes, no 409's, no hot-rod lincolns, no wipeout, no louie-louie, no so fine, no little GTO, just mindless racket and purple hair. No, you aint no Xer. I'll bet your clothes even fit you and you don't wear eye makeup and you know who Jerry Lee Lewis is. Admit it, you're an old fart, too.
Hey, a wild evening for me is to put on the Doors and make that rockin' chair FLY. Aint quite the same without a doobie, though.

I turn 30 next month. My bike is a 78 model, but head stamped June 1977. I was 1 year old in June of 1977!

52 here, bought a new 79 special, had a new 74 RD350, new TX 500 and new XS850. Sold the RD and the 650 and they are the only two I regretted selling. Don't really want to ride the RD again, too hard to keep running.
Found a friend who wanted to sell his 79 XS 650 and I jumped at the chance, tossed away my FT500 and started in on the 650. They are alot of fun to play with, sound like a triumph, but don't take any of that work to keep running. The 650 runs all the time, even with my wrenching skills! I wouldn't give it up, even when my wife bought me a harley.

LOL...Pops... Man there was plenty angry pissed off music when you and I were coming up in the late 60s.. CCR's "Run Through the Jungle" or "Fortunate Son" come to mind... What about Hendrix's Band Of Gypsies " Machine Gun"... With the price of gas, who can afford weed? LOL ;D

I'm 28. I like this bike because it is cheap, versitile, maintainable, and a cool piece of history. Young guys are buying bikes to save money on gas, and to get into riding. They are targeting 70's-80's Yamahas, Kawasakis, and Hondas. I want to learn to ride on a bike that won't cost me $10,000. Also, the sites like this one are a great help to a lot of first time wrenchers. This site's people and information are another reason I want to focus on this type of bike.

Now I'm finding that I really love the 650's I may have to pick up one for me too.
I think this should be a poll post. Can we do polls on this board???

Sure have enjoyed reading all these posts. My observations are that it's good that the younger dudes are interested in keeping the 650 alive, chopped or not. Some like stock, some chopped. Us old dudes got the 70's stories, complete with angry rock n' roll, us desperados on iron horses searching for our place in the universe. I bought a new 1977 maxi maroon D in the summer of 77 and went from Michigan to Arizona on a 5 week vacation in August. Elvis died while I was in Colorado. 2 years later I sold it so I could buy a home in Tucson with my live in girlfriend-BIG mistake! I ended up losing all of the above . Now I am back into it again with the 3 bikes listed on the left. I bought my 81 H and Suzuki for less money than my brother spent in sales tax for his Harley King and I love what I have. I think I found my place in the universe or else I just know that I don't know the answer . And man I can really pick up the chicks on my bike now that I am 53. There are only 3 problems with that. 1) I am married 2) They are my age. I don't mind being a grandpa but I don't want to sleep with a grandma. 3) They outweigh me by 100 pounds and I would have to flatten my testicles to sit on my gas tank to make room for them. That would look pretty silly.

I'm 49, been known as crazypj for (gulp) over 32yrs Still trying to live up to it (getting a lot more difficult when I have to go to physiotherapy 3 times a week ;D) Resurected the 1crazypj as well, (looking through old messages/e-mail and found welcome, with password) Had XS up to indicated 105 on wednesday, forgot how much old bikes weave at speed, made the ride to work in traffic quite 'interesting' (s'funny, seems good at 75~85 which is speed where just about everyone else is ) The new Kawasaki Ninja didnt want to pass me, was probably afraid I'd run into him May need to fit lower bars (going slower is not an option ;D ;D) Still managed to get 40mpg ;D Jetting still not right but closer. PJ, that Ninja prolly didn't pass you because he was back there drinking in the sounds you were laying on him and wishing HIS sounded like that.
