Hey guys well I'm back project came to a stand still this winter but now snowmobiling season is done so I think it's time to paint my frame. Anyways how many of you guys painted your own frames?? I kind of wanted to do it myself even if turns out a little messed up but I hope not. Frame is all sand blasted and I have sanded it a little. What is the best painting teqneqs to use I was told to shoot my top coat over a tacky primer after the primer has aired out a little?? Also what paint is the good not anything realy fansy and whats it going to run for? Now if I could just make my mind up on a color.

rust-oleum 7779 gloss black enamel. About 12 bucks a gallon. Apply with a brush (it's thick)
It gives an amazing, deep, glossy enamel finish that hides surface blemishes. And it is easy to apply. Brush marks go away as it dries.
Paint on a hot day. Don't work it, just use the minimum brush strokes needed to lay it down.
I got this tip from another string on this board and now I love this stuff.

I was thinking of shooting it with a gun since I have a nice gravity feed that has never been used. I am thinking a nice blue with a little metal flake??

I swear by the Dupont Chromapremier system.
4004 2k Primer
42470 sealer
Chromabase paint and 4700 clear.
I put 2350 flex agent in everything these days because it makes the clear flow out better and increases flexibity and durability.
The first year I build something, I usually use a cheap spray can paint job in case I have to change tabs or add tabs.

I'm a fan of epoxy primer (PPG DP90LF) for bare metal for adhesion and corrosion protection. Also epoxy has a long recoat time so that suits a bike frame with many hard to reach areas. Re-scuff the frame with 180# sand paper, blow it off with air, and clean it twice with wax & grease remover (PPG DX330). Apply 2 coats of the epoxy primer with about 30 mins between coats, let the primer dry overnight. The next day before you start painting wipe the frame with a tac rag to remove any dust that may have settled on it. Mix up some PPG Concept urethane black (DCC9300) and apply 2 or 3 coats on the black, let it dry a day or 2 and reassemble. You can go to www.ppg.com/cr-refinish/phase1/frmHome.aspfor info on the paints and to find a dealer in your area. This is a simple system that should keep costs down but still give great performance.
