Did my engine covers and rocker covers....came out BEAUTIFULLY. Up to almost a satin chrome....strictly with #000 steel wool, followed up with Dremel cotton buffer and Mother's then hand polishing and buffing.
Now working on the Akront 19" rims and hubs. Hubs no problem....I'm thrilled. However, the rims seem to have gotten a black/gray spotty 'tarnish' under the factory clear coat....particularly in the center spoke hole areas.
I first use paint stripper, letting it sit for 10 mins. then polishing it off with #000 steel wool. Removes the clear coat. Then I'm using #000 with white polishing compound. Next - the Dremel on 1-2 speed with the bullet shaped cotton buffer with white polishing compound. Then disc-shaped cotton buffer at same speed with Mother's. THEN hard-rubbing in with damp clean cloth with Mother's followed by a good hand buffing. Problem is, those black/gray 'tarnish' spots persist and almost make me want to go for new (wider) Akronts (or bead-blasting the center sections and powder coating).
Any ideas how to remove the tarnish?
